Instant Peay Play: APSU Governors Athletic Department had great 2017-18 School Year

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – With baseball and track and field putting a wrap on their respective season’s this past week, Austin Peay State University’s athletic department saw the end to a very successful 2017-18 school year.

Overall, the department posted a combined win-loss record of 200-167-3 over the school year, with 10 of the 16 teams (baseball, men’s basketball, football, men’s golf, women’s basketball, women’s golf, soccer, softball, women’s tennis and volleyball) finishing with .500-or-better records.

First-Team All-OVC pick Michael Costanzo among five APSU Govs named to All-OVC teams

APSU BaseballBrentwood, TN – Senior starting pitcher Michael Costanzo was named First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference, headlining a group of five Austin Peay State University baseball players to receive postseason recognition from the league’s coaches and baseball sports information directors, Tuesday.

Joining Costanzo as Second-Team All-OVC honorees were sophomore first baseman Parker Phillips, senior second baseman Garrett Giovannelli and junior starting pitcher Jacques Pucheu. In addition, pitcher Harley Gollert was recognized on the league’s All-Freshman team.

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – A game that started one day and ended on another and included a pair of milestones for Austin Peay State University’s baseball team was spoiled late by an upstart Eastern Illinois squad, which rallied to down their hosts 13-11 in the first game of an Ohio Valley Conference series, Thursday night, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (30-23, 17-11 OVC) jumped out to a big lead thanks to a six-run second inning.

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Baseball team regular season ends this week when APSU hosts Eastern Illinois in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference set, Thursday-Saturday at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The three-game set, which can be seen on the OVC Digital Network, is scheduled to begin with a 6:00pm contests both Thursday and Friday.

Another pitcher’s duel unfolded between Governors starter Brandon Vial and Clemson starter Jake Higginbotham each opened with five scoreless innings.

APSU BaseballClemson, SC – Austin Peay State University pitchers Michael Costanzo and Brett Newberg did not allow a run after the fourth inning as APSU’s baseball team used an early offensive onslaught to down No. 5 Clemson, 6-3, in nonconference action, Friday night, at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Austin Peay (30-20) broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings, using four singles to score two runs in the first before hitting a pair of solo home runs in the fourth inning.
