Aide to State Senator sends racist e-mail

Tennessee Democratic legislators and Black Caucus members are outraged over an e-mail about President Barack Obama that was sent by a state employee who works for Republican State Senator Diane Black.

The e-mail from Sherri Goforth, a legislative aide and twenty year employee for the state was sent to other staff who also work for Republican Senators. Goforth claims to have hit the wrong button and sent the email to the wrong list of people according to published reports.

The controversial email showed either a portrait or photo of all 43 U.S. presidents but when you get to the picture of Barack Obama the 44th president there is only a wide set of white eyes in a black box background.

As spring arrives, let us find personal and political renewal

As we move into spring and the substance of 2009, the year will continue to bring renewal. Changes in power, approaches,  and results  will impact Clarksville, the State of Tennessee and the nation.  For when we pray “God Bless America,” there is the opportunity for renewal for us personally as well as nationally throughout this year.

In 2009,  we have a favorable wind of renewal available to re-establish virtues, moral principles, and moral quality to our government at all levels. In foreign policy let us be done with torture, rendition and the deliberate misleading of the public in the guise of justifying action that leads to placing our men and women in uniform unnecessarily in harm’s way and demolishing governments of other nations. Let this year be the year to bury the order of pre-emptive military intervention against what we perceive as nefarious nations. «Read the rest of this article»

CMCSS e-mail “misunderstood” by principals; community leaders appeased but mourn “lost opportunity”

A delegation of multi-cultural community leaders met with Clarksville-Montgomery County School System Director of Schools Michael Harris today to learn why a number of the city’s high school students were not allowed access to inaugural coverage of President Barack Obama.

CMCSS was deluged with phone calls for and against viewing the inauguration on school time, and the questionable e-mail to teachers was the result. The e-mail from the directors of high, middle and elementary schools read in part:

“If any of your teachers is going to show the Inauguration in the classroom it should be tied to their curriculum … I think you may leave yourself open to question if students are just watching the Inauguration in a passive manner. Community leaders question CMCSS on lack of student access to inauguration coverage

A Multi-Cultural Coalition of leaders from the community and the Clarksville NAACP will meet with the Clarksville-Montgomery County  Director of Schools, Mr. Michael Harris, at 3 p.m. Monday, January 26, to discuss the recent policy disseminated system wide by email that prevented a significant majority of students from viewing the Historic Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Many students and parents assumed they would watch the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama in class Tuesday but were shocked, disappointed and upset about the majority of classes in which the inauguration wasn’t shown.

Obama overturns Bush decision to cut international funding for family planning

Without a doubt, President Barack Obama hit the ground running this week, putting pen to paper and reversing a Bush administration ruling that kept U.S. dollars from funding worldwide family planning clinics that promote abortion and counseling services related to abortion and family planning. Until today, the law prohibited any organization receiving family-planning funds from the U.S. Agency for International Development from offering abortions or counseling for abortions.

President Obama said he did not want family planning to be used a “political wedge” and refused to continue that “stale and fruitless debate.” «Read the rest of this article»

Inauguration viewing linked to curriculum; some CMCSS students denied a view of “history as it happened”

“Are you kidding me?” was my initial response when the parents of two Clarksville students (middle and high schoolers) reported that their two students (high school and middle school) were not afforded the opportunity to view the presidential Inauguration in their  Clarksville-Montgomery County School System classrooms.

The parental understanding was that by CMCSS decree  “unless the inauguration was directly related to what was being taught in a given class” the inauguration would not be watched. “Are you kidding me?” was quickly followed by feelings that  can best be described as “appalled, irate, embarassed…”

I, as a writer, history lover, activist, parent and grandparent, was, well,  stunned.

“Classroom teachers were not allowed to show the inauguration unless it dealt specifically with curriculum.” The parents in question said their understanding was that some parents did not want their children “to be ‘exposed’” to the  views of the candidate.” Candidate. Cyber-savvy White House unveils new administration website

Change has indeed come to America.

Even as the inauguration of President Barack Obama got underway in Washington D.C. today, the new White House website, www.whitehouse.gov, was up and running.

It’s an impressive site, building on and expanding the technology and communication systems that tech-savvy Obama used in his presidential campaign. It went live at noon, January 20.

On first click, the headline reads “Change has come to America.” On three subsequent pages, we read: “Revitalizing the Economy,” “Welcome to the new whitehouse.gov,” and “A New Era of Public Service.”

Dynamic is the best way to describe www.whitehouse.gov, which will, in coming weeks, feature a weekly video address (every Saturday) by President Obama. The site includes “briefing room” of slide shows, a White House blog, proclamations, executive orders, and general news (appointments, nominations). Users will also be able to subscribe to e-mail updates. Visitors can e-mail President Obama and his staff with a character limit set at 500. «Read the rest of this article»

President Barack Obama: Turning a new page in American history

Moved to tears....

At noon today, Senator Barack Obama became President Barack Obama, a few minutes before he actually took the oath of office. The transfer of power is dictated by law, and law says at 12 noon on January 20th.

In the ballroom at Austin Peay State University, students, teachers and guests watched as the hand of the clock ticked 12, triggering cheers, cries of “yes” and  emotional tears of joy and hope, watching the event unfold on a projection screen. Minutes later, with his hand on the famed Lincoln Bible, Obama stood tall at the podium, swearing to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” His wife Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha, stood by his side. The APSU ballroom again filled with applause, cheers and tears.

Leading up to the oath of office...

It was a scene repeated across the country in the obvious places like Times Square in New York, Atlanta, Pasadena, and downtown Chicago, but also in places like Harlem, where large screens on street corners gave everyone a chance to view. In churches, public halls, classrooms and other venues, all eyes were on Washington, where more than two million people braved 20 degree temperatures and near single-digit wind chills to stand, wait and watch this piece of history unfold. «Read the rest of this article»
