The Tennessee Coalition of Health Care for America Now (HCAN) hosted a prayer breakfast on Saturday April 25 at Erza Emmanuel Ministries. Thirty local leaders of various faiths were in attendance. The event highlighted the campaign for quality, affordable health care reform and began the process of awareness about the additional resources coming to Tennessee as a result of the Economic Stimulus Package (American Recovery and Reconstruction Act) passed earlier this year by the congress.

“We can no longer afford to wait to fix health care in our country. Too many families, too many businesses, too many of you are struggling to make ends meet. No one should have to choose between seeing a doctor when they’re sick, and putting food on the table, or paying rent,” said Rico X, TN organizer for HCAN. «Read the rest of this article»

By Mark Naccarato | April 28, 2009 | Print This Post

For Profit HealthcareWith a $1.4 billion budget shortfall and a loss of some 90,000 jobs last year, the economic situation in Tennessee continues to be dire. It doesn’t help that both of Tennessee’s senators – Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker – voted against creating 70,000 new jobs when they said “no” to the President’s economic recovery plan. But now the question becomes, “with the current economic crisis, can the country afford to make massive changes in our health care system?”

Well to hear our conservative friends tell it… heck no. And they wouldn’t lie to us, right? Seriously, the conservatives’ lack of credibility aside, let’s take a look at the hard facts and do the math on the cost of doing nothing when it comes to health care reform. «Read the rest of this article»

Despite heavy rains, the Nashville Peace Coalition held a planned Peace street  rally at Centennial Park in Nashville today, just days before the anniversary (March 19) of the Iraq War.

The Nashville Peace Coalition has called  for peace in Afghanistan and Iraq on the sixth anniversary of the occupation of Iraq; the street protest went on as planned but rain washed out plans for an accompanying concert and speaker program that was to have from noon to 4 p.m.

“Now is the Time for Peace” was intended as an appeal to President Obama and the Democratic House and Senate to withdraw all troops from Iraq including non-combat troops and reverse the recently announced troop surge in Afghanistan.  «Read the rest of this article»

President Obama has  signed a law that expands the time frame in which workers can sue for discrimination they have experienced based on gender, race, national origin or religion.

“We are upholding one of this nation’s first principles: that we are all created equal and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness,” Obama said before signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which effectively nullifies the 2007 Supreme Court decision.

Silke welcomes patrons to post-inaugural party

Silke’s Old World Breads on College Street was the place to be Saturday night (Jan. 24).

To celebrate the inauguration of President Obama and “change” for America, Silke’s offered an all-you can eat after-hours  buffet, which in tandem with the extensive art on exhibit in this shop, made the $8 per person event a popular choice. The crowds proved it.

Advance tickets were sold, and little more than a half-hour into the event, Silke’s was turning away people (who had not purchased advanced tickets) at the door. «Read the rest of this article»

Faith based groups: No proselytizing with tax-dollars

By Rev. Charles Moreland | January 24, 2009 | Print This Post

obama_portrait_President Obama is a person of faith; he recognizes the strength (spiritual) that is released in his personal life as he practices daily spiritual exercises.

While on active duty as a U.S. Army Chaplain, I appreciated serving, ministry and  working with chaplains who were also assiociated with the same denomination as President Obama.

Already our new president is strengthening the bonds of religion and society and how government, churches, and religious organizations can work together to better community and country. However, there are guidelines and regulations for each to follow to ensure maximum success.

opinion-081On the campaign trail. President Obama emphasized his Christian faith;  in speeches he connected faith and public policy. For instance, he spoke about the present “faith-based” initiatives. He recognized the value of a partnership between government and religious faith organizations dedicated to improving communities. He is already pledging  and committing to expanding and renaming the faith-based office. «Read the rest of this article»
