Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball team opens it 2019 regular season this coming weekend at Raymond C. Hand Park looking to return to the top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings after an up-and-down 2018 campaign.

The Govs are coming off a respectable 30-27 season a year ago — included a 17-13 mark in OVC play – but it was also a season that saw a team that had wins versus the likes of Illinois, Kansas State and Top-five nationally ranked Clemson also have a seven-game losing streak to end the season.

APSU Governors student-athletes set department record with 3.15 GPA in Fall 2018

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) student-athletes set a department record with a 3.15 grade-point average for the Fall 2018 semester.

For the first time, Austin Peay student-athletes have posted a department-wide GPA of 3.0 or greater in three consecutive semesters. A record 209 student-athletes received academic recognition for the Fall 2018 semester, including 107 recognized on the dean’s list. It’s the third time 100 or more student athletes have been named to the dean’s list.

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsBrentwood, TN – A program-record 123 Austin Peay State University student-athletes have been named to the 2017-18 Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll, released Wednesday by the conference office.

Student-athletes must have achieved a 3.25 grade-point average, were eligible and on the team throughout the competitive season in their chosen NCAA-sponsored sport(s) and used a season of competition in that sport.

APSU BaseballClemson, SC – A toe-to-toe battle saw Austin Peay State University’s baseball team match Clemson and force extra innings before falling in walk-off fashion, 3-2, in Sunday action at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Another pitcher’s duel unfolded between Governors starter Brandon Vial and Clemson starter Jake Higginbotham each opened with five scoreless innings.

APSU Baseball blanks Western Kentucky, 6-0

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University starting pitcher Josh Rye threw six scoreless innings and four relievers followed him on the mound as APSU’s baseball team shutout Western Kentucky, 6-0, in nonconference action Tuesday at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Rye (1-3) powered his way through the first five innings. After facing just 10 batters in the first three innings, he worked around doubles in the fourth and fifth to keep the shutout bid going. Rye faced his toughest test in the sixth when the first three batters reached safely to load the bases.

APSU Baseball falls at home to Middle Tennessee, 9-0

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team fell behind early and could not recover, dropping a 9-0 nonconference decision to Middle Tennessee, Tuesday night at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Middle Tennessee (9-8) jumped out a quick lead when it sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring six runs. Left fielder Blake Benefield had a two-run double and catcher Jake Hagenow added a two-run single to help build the 6-0 lead.

Austin Peay (3-0) opened its season with a last-minute excursion to St. Louis where it swept through two games against South Dakota State before closing the weekend by downing Illinois.

APSU BaseballSt. Louis, MO – Shortstop Garrett Kueber scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to give Austin Peay State University’s baseball team a lead it would not relinquish in a 4-2 victory against South Dakota State, Friday afternoon at Billiken Sports Park.

Austin Peay (1-0) saw its offense rally just after South Dakota State’s Newt Johnson tied the game, 2-2, with a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh.

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team opens its regular season this coming weekend, February 16th-18th versus Maryland Eastern Shore, at Raymond C. Hand Park looking to prove the pre-season pollsters wrong in their picking the Govs to finish well down in the standings in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Governors, who finished the 2017 season 28-30 overall and 13-16 in OVC, were picked to finish seventh by the league’s head coaches and sports information contacts and well behind league favorite and defending champion Tennessee Tech – who received 15 of the 22 total first-place votes in the pre-season poll.
