APSU Softball nails five home runs in doubleheader sweep of Samford

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN –  On Wednesday at Cheryl Holt Field, Austin Peay State University’s softball team hit five home runs to power its way past Samford University, 5-2 and 10-7, in its final pre-Ohio Valley Conference contests.

Of all the home runs the Govs (10-14) hit on Wednesday, none may have been bigger that the final one of the day, a three-run shot by Kendall Vedder in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2, to cap a six-run, sixth inning, rally past Samford (10-21), who had scored five runs of their own in the top of the inning to take their only lead of the day, 7-4.

Instant Peay Play: Busy and key home week for APSU Governors athletics

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – If you’re a fan of Austin Peay State University athletics — or spring sports in general — this may be the week for you, as the Govs have several key home events coming up over the next seven days that should have huge Ohio Valley Conference implications for those teams.

For baseball (10-9, 4-2 OVC) , the Govs open the week with a couple of mid-week games (Tuesday-Wednesday) versus Arkansas State (11-8) — who have played 10 straight games at home – having not played away from Jonesboro, AR, since February 26th.

APSU Softball releases 2017 Schedule

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will play four in-season tournaments, as well as 16 home games at Cheryl Holt Field, to highlight its 2017 regular-season schedule.

The four tournament appearances will transpire over the first five weeks of the season for the Governors with a trip to Kennesaw, GA, for the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament (February 11th-12th); Bowling Green, KY, for the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Fling (February 24th-26th); Oxford, MS, for the Red & Blue Classic (March 3rd-5th) and Murray, KY, for the Racer Classic (March 10th-12th).

APSU Cross Country Teams show improvement in Chattanooga

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsChattanooga, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s and women’s cross country teams continued to make improvements in the second meet of the season, the Powerade Invite, at the Moccasin Bend Race Course.

The Governors men’s team finished fourth out of six competing schools, while the women claimed sixth of seven spots. Other universities competing in the event were Middle Tennessee, who won both events, Alabama, Chattanooga, Samford, Mercer and Alabama A&M.

APSU Women’s Volleyball hits the road to play in Trojan Invitational

APSU Women's Volleyball - Austin Peay State UniversityTroy, AL – The Governors invasion of Troy begins when Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team plays in the Trojan Invitational, Friday-Saturday, at Trojan Arena. The three-match weekend begins with a 9:30am, Friday contest against New Mexico State followed by a 5:00pm match against Southern.

Austin Peay then plays Valparaiso in an 11:30am, Saturday contest before the Govs football contest that day.

Former APSU Soccer star Tatiana Ariza to reprise her role with Colombian National Team in Rio

APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Former Austin Peay State University soccer standout Tatiana Ariza will once again represent her native Colombia at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, August 3rd-20th, in Brazil.

Ariza was one of 18 players chosen Thursday to represent Las Cafeteras (The Coffee Growers), beginning August 3rd against France in Belo Horizonte. Colombia also is scheduled to face New Zealand (August 6th) and the United States (August 9th) in the first stage of Group G.

APSU Lady Govs Softball drops doubleheader at Samford

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityBirmingham, AL – Austin Peay State University’s softball team ended its run of scoreless innings, Wednesday, but couldn’t come away with a victory, as they dropped 7-0 and 5-1 finals to Samford.

Carly Mattson‘s second home run of the season, with one out in the top of the fourth inning of the second game, ended a run of 33 1/3 innings without scoring a run for the Lady Govs (6-31) – the longest such streak since the 2000 season.

APSU Lady Govs Softball heads to Samford for final non-conference games

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityBirmingham, AL – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will step out of Ohio Valley Conference play for the final time in 2016, 3:00pm, Wednesday, when it travels to Samford University for a doubleheader.

The Governors (6-29) enter the twinbill having been held scoreless for the last 23 innings, including being swept in a three-game OVC series at Eastern Illinois this past weekend.
