Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team put the finishing touches on its 2013 recruiting class with the addition of right-handed pitcher D.W. Whitson from Columbia State Community College.
The 6-5, 195-pound Whitson posted an 8-2 record and 3.41 ERA last season for Columbia State. He recorded 41 strikeouts in 68.2 innings pitched over 13 appearances. That mark included allowing only one run in a complete-game victory against Southwest Tennessee in the Region VII Tournament’s third round. He pitched sparingly as a freshman for the Chargers, seeing action in 15 innings over eight games and finishing 0-1 with a 2.40 ERA. «Read the rest of this article»

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team added seven signees during the spring signing period, bringing the 2013 class to 15 players in total, head coach Gary McClure announced, Monday.
Signing a national letter of intent to join the Govs in 2013 were right-handed pitcher Kevin Corey, of Los Gatos, CA; right-handed pitcher Tyler Crawford, of Seymour, TN; catcher Michael Davis, of Savannah, TN; utility player Craig Massoni, of Danville, CA.; right-handed pitcher Chase Morris, of Tullahoma, TN; right-handed pitcher Lee Ridenhour, of Lenexa, KS; and Kyle Schlatter, of Overland Park, KS.

National Guard responds to Hurricane Irene

More than 2,000 Soldiers and Airmen move to East Coast
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Major General Max Haston, Tennessee’s Adjutant General, announced today that more than 2,000 Tennessee National Guard troops will respond to East Coast states to assist in rescue and recovery operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.
“Tennessee received a request through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact for troops and equipment for rescue and recovery operations in the wake of Hurricane Irene,” said MG Haston. “The Tennessee Army and Air National Guard stand ready to assist however needed.”
The Emergency Management Assistance Compact is a congressionally ratified organization that provides form and structure to interstate mutual aid. «Read the rest of this article»

Marks Fourth State Park Golf Course to Receive Designation
Pickwick Dam, TN – Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke is pleased to announce that the Winfield Dunn Golf Course at Pickwick Landing State Park was recently recognized as a Groundwater Guardian Green site. The Pickwick Landing course joins the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay State Park, Paris Landing and the Montgomery Bell golf course as one of the only four sites in Tennessee with this designation from The Groundwater Foundation.
Groundwater Guardian Green Sites are places with significant green space – such as golf courses, ball fields, educational campuses and office parks – that implement effective groundwater and surface water practices to protect water quality. Pickwick Landing’s Winfield Dunn Golf Course documented an array of groundwater-friendly practices to earn this exclusive designation. Pickwick Landing State Park to Hold 6th Annual Christmas in the Park Festival

Pickwick Dam, TN – Pickwick Landing State Park will kick off the holidays with its 6th Annual Christmas in the Park festival December 10th-11th.
Enjoy Pickwick Landing’s Festival of Lights via trolley or a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park, viewing the beautiful luminaries and lighted displays. In addition, more than 50 local retailers and crafters will be on hand, displaying and offering unique items at the park’s Holiday Mart. The Holiday Mart times are Friday from noon until 9:00pm and Saturday beginning at 10:00am until 9:00pm.
