Austin Peay Lady Govs Basketball faces the Morehead State Eagles in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament’s opening game

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – The eighth-seeded Austin Peay women’s basketball team will face fifth-seed Morehead State in the noon, Wednesday, opening game of the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Championship at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium. The Lady Govs defeated Southeast Missouri, 88-84, Saturday to earn the final spot in the tournament.

Morehead State wrapped up its regular-season slate with a 72-70 overtime loss to SIU Edwardsville, Saturday. The two teams split the regular-season series with the home team winning each contest. Morehead State won the first meeting, 74-67 on December 31st, before Austin Peay returned the favor with an 88-81 overtime win in Clarksville, February 18th.

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – While there isn’t officially a play-in game to the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Championship, Austin Peay and Southeast Missouri will square off at 5:15pm, Saturday in a game that will emulate a play-in affair in every way possible.

The Lady Govs and Redhawks enter the regular-season finale tied for the final spot in the eight-team field with the winner of Saturday’s contest earning that spot while the losing squad will see its season come to an end.

The Lady Govs own a modest two-game win streak after posting an 88-81 overtime victory against Morehead State, Saturday. The Skyhawks currently own an impressive 10-game win streak after posting wins at Murray State (91-67, February 16th) and at Southeast Missouri (77-44, February 18th) last week.

Austin Peay Lady Govs Basketball’s Shira Buley and Leslie Martinez turn in career nights in Over Time win against Morehead State

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Entering Saturday night’s game against Morehead State, Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels knew she would need to receive special performances from some of her players to capture a victory.

Luckily for Daniels, she didn’t received just one career performance. She received two.

Leslie Martinez scored a career-high 20 points and reserve Shira Buley added eight points of her career-high 10 points in overtime as the suddenly-hot Lady Govs grabbed an 88-81 victory over Morehead State.

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay begins a regular-season closing stretch of four games in 12 days when it travels to Murray State for a 7:00pm, Monday, contest. The Lady Govs won this season’s first meeting between the two teams, 71-63, January 7th. However, the two teams have gone in dramatically different directions since that meeting.

The Lady Govs will bring an eight-game losing streak into the contest and return to action following a six-day break after its 68-65 loss to Tennessee Tech, last Monday. Murray State has won seven of its 11 games since the first meeting and has won the first two games of its current four-game homestand.

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsEdwardsville, IL – Austin Peay concludes its trip through Illinois with a 7:00pm, Monday contest at SIU Edwardsville, the league’s newest member. Both teams enter the contest following losses, Saturday. The Lady Govs suffered an 80-46 loss at Eastern Illinois while SIU Edwardsville fell to Murray State, 67-59.

It will be third meeting all-time between the two squads, Austin Peay winning at home during the 2008-09 season and SIU Edwardsville winning its home contest last season. The Cougars enter the contest fifth in the league standings but will not be eligible to participate in the OVC Tournament – one year remains on their transition to full NCAA Division I status.

Meanwhile, the Panthers – ranked No. 19 in the CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Poll – gained sole possession of the OVC’s top spot after posting a 70-63 victory against UT Martin, Monday. Austin Peay owns a 9-7 record in Charleston, IL, but have lost in its last four trips, each by a double-digit margin.

Austin Peay Lady Govs Basketball snap losing streak with overtime win at Belmont

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsNashville, TN – Senior Whitney Hanley’s jumper with 1.8 seconds remaining in overtime gave Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team a 58-56 victory against Belmont, in non-conference action, Sunday afternoon, at Curb Event Center.

Austin Peay (3-8), which snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win, overcame a nearly 15-minute stretch without a field goal. The Lady Govs led 13-12 on Hanley’s three-pointer with 10:02 left in the first half. However, Austin Peay would not make another field goal until freshman Shira Buley’s layup at the 15:45 mark of the second half.
