Student Job Fair in Clarksville a Huge Success

Clarksville, TN – The Student Job Fair hosted by Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts was a huge success. Over 400 students attended the Job Fair, Thursday, May 2nd and were successful in applying for summer jobs as well as discussing their future education plans with four institutions of higher learning.

“Great thanks to all the employers that attended as well as APSU, Nashville State Community College (Clarksville Campus), Tennessee Technology Center (Clarksville Campus) and Daymar Institute,” said State Representative Joe Pitts (D-Clarksville). “This event would not have been successful without the hard work of Melinda Williams and Wayne Simpson of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.”

Tennessee Legislation extending protections to private foundations set for House Floor Vote Monday night

Operation Stand Down coming to Clarksville to assist Veterans

Nashville, TN – House Bill 423/Senate Bill 527 affords private foundations with protections from governmental intrusion

House Bill 0423, sponsored by Tennessee Representative Joe Pitts, adds a new section to the Tennessee Code that would make “private foundation” have the same meaning as it does in section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as amended.

A private foundation would not be required by state or local government to disclose the sensitive about the foundation’s employees, officers, directors, trustees, or contributors, without the prior written consent of the individual or individuals in question.

Fifth graders from Sumner County testified before the House Education Committee on Tuesday. They promoted the use of Apple iPads in the classroom and treated committee members and the audience to a very compelling presentation about the role and effectiveness of technology in public education.

Legislation regarding uninsured motorists clears first hurdle

Nashville, TN – Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts (D-Clarksville) filed House Bill 0431 (Senate Bill 0251), an important piece of legislation which would increase the penalty for driving without liability insurance.

The proposal would enhance the penalty from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $100.00 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by up to 11 months 29 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,500) when the offender is at fault for an accident resulting in bodily injury or death due to criminal negligence.

This legislation passed its first hurdle in the House Criminal Sub Committee this week and will be heard in the Criminal Full Committee on Wednesday, February 27th. «Read the rest of this article»

Charter School and Virtual School Legislation take the spotlight this week

Nashville, TN – Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts (D-Clarksville) will propose an amendment to House Bill 0151/Senate Bill 0157 proposed by the Department of Education regarding virtual schools.

The administration’s proposal to address poorly performing virtual schools will allow the Department of Education to institute enrollment caps, or direct the local school district to close the virtual school if it fails to achieve certain student growth benchmarks two academic years in a row. «Read the rest of this article»

Motorcycle Operator Safety Training Legislation Introduced in Tennessee

Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts also speaks to 4th Graders at Minglewood Elementary School

Nashville, TN – Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts (D-Clarksville) has introduced legislation to require those individuals under the age of 18 who are applying for a motorcycle operator’s license to complete a state approved training course prior to receiving their license.

This measure is the result of a recent study completed by the Tennessee Department of Safety, a bill also sponsored by Rep. Pitts in 2012, that shows motorcycle injuries and fatalities are up sharply in the state.

Lone Oak Picnic tradition attracts Candidates

Cunningham, TN – The 104th Lone Oak Picnic was held Saturday, July 28th by the Central Civitan Club at the Civitan Building on Alonzo Place. The Lone Oak Picnic has a long standing tradition of candidates running for election giving speeches during the event. Clarksville Online videoed each candidate’s speech for those unable to attend.

The Lone Oak Picnic is always the last Saturday in July. This is also the last weekend before the state primary election which makes it a great opportunity for the candidates to get in front of voters one last time.

The Election is over, and the results are in

Clarksville, TN – Across Tennessee yesterday, the  voters went to the polls to elect their representatives to variety of Federal, State, and Local offices. In Montgomery County voters cast ballots for the Tennessee Governor, Two congressional seats, three Tennessee House seats,  the Clarksville City Mayor, and half of the city council seats.

In the Federal and Tennessee Governor’s Race, Republicans overwhelmingly won in Montgomery County; and across the state. Tennessee will likely be moving to to a deeper shade of red, as the strong Republican majority will control the upcoming redistricting process.
