Clarksville-Montgomery County School Board Awards Points of Pride

Clarksville, TN – Burt Elementary teacher Kenzi Neuman is being recognized for the initiative she took in entering Burt Elementary School in a state lottery which will allow fifth graders to visit the Tennessee State Museum on Feb. 15 and view the actual Emancipation Proclamation and Thirteenth amendment, which will be on display there for only 72 hours. An Abraham Lincoln impersonator also will visit the students at their school February 4 to impart more knowledge about these historical documents.

Generous donation gives APSU three famed William Edmondson Sculptures

Clarksville, TN – William Edmondson, a humble stone carver and the son of slaves, died quietly after years of declining health. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Nashville.

It was an ironic fate, given that Edmondson spent years carving elaborate headstones for cemeteries around middle Tennessee. The eccentric artist believed that God commanded him to sculpt the shapes out of limestone, and after a few years, he began adding statues of biblical characters, people and animals to his body of work. His sculptures caught the eyes of several prominent art critics and in 1937, Edmondson became the first African-American artist to have a solo show of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

New Austin Peay State University exhibit honors country music legend Roy Acuff

Clarksville, TN – Twenty-five years ago, the legendary “King of Country Music” Roy Acuff endowed a Chair of Excellence at Austin Peay State University, allowing the Institution to bring world-renowned artistic talents to campus each year to work with students.

To commemorate that generous gift, the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts is hosting a special exhibit, “Roy Acuff: Life and Legend” in the Mable Larson Gallery within the University’s Harned Hall. It will run from October 4th–October 29th, and is free and open to the public.
