Lidia Yanes Garcia named Outstanding Female Athlete, Track’s Breigh Jones chosen Female Legends

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TNChris Horton, who punctuated a consummate basketball career with Ohio Valley Conference tournament most valuable player honors, has been chosen as both Austin Peay State University’s 2015-16 Outstanding Male Athlete as well as the Legends Award recipient as the most valuable male senior athlete.

Meanwhile, Lidia Yanes Garcia, who became the first women’s tennis player in OVC history to be named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season, was named APSU’s Outstanding Female Athlete.

Austin Peay State University Softball games at Southeast Missouri have schedule changed

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityCape Girardeau, MO – With the forecast of heavy rain over the weekend, Austin Peay State University will see its three-game Ohio Valley Conference softball series start at Southeast Missouri pushed up a day.

Originally scheduled for a Saturday-Sunday matchup, the Governors (7-34, 3-18 OVC) now will open play versus the Redhawks (13-30, 7-14 OVC) with a 2:00pm, Friday doubleheader at the Southeast Softball Complex, with the Saturday single game start time still to be determined with the weather trepidations.

APSU Lady Govs Softball splits doubleheader with Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TNNatalie Ayala held Tennessee Tech to one run over 6.1 innings, Sunday at Cheryl Holt Field, as Austin Peay State University’s softball team defeated the Golden Eagles 5-1, in Game 1 of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader, before dropping the nightcap, 12-1.

Ayala (1-10) scattered six hits in her start for Austin Peay (7-34, 3-18 OVC), while striking out four and walking three, not giving up a run until the top of the seventh inning.

APSU Governors Golf heads to Alabama for OVC Championships

APSU Men's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityMuscle Shoals, AL – Although Austin Peay State University men’s golf team has won eight Ohio Valley Conference championships, it will seek its first under Robbie Wilson when it competes, Monday-Wednesday, in the league championship tournament at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama.

The 54-hole men’s championship will be competed on the par-72 Fighting Joe course, a 7,258-yard layout, with 74.0 slope and 135 course ratings.

Austin Peay State University Softball drops doubleheader to Jacksonville State, Saturday

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team had its seventh-inning rally come up short versus Ohio Valley Conference leading Jacksonville State, Saturday at Cheryl Holt Field, as the Lady Govs fell 4-1 in Game 1 and 5-1 in Game 2.

The Govs (6-33, 2-19 OVC) trailed the Gamecocks 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Kacy Acree opened the inning with a double and moved to third base an out later on a single by Sidney Hooper.

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will play its final two Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader-only matchups of the season this weekend as it plays host to Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech.

The Govs (6-31, 2-15 OVC) will open play, noon, Saturday by facing OVC-leading Jacksonville State while concluding the weekend’s action, noon, Sunday versus Tennessee Tech.

APSU Lady Govs Softball drops doubleheader at Samford

APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityBirmingham, AL – Austin Peay State University’s softball team ended its run of scoreless innings, Wednesday, but couldn’t come away with a victory, as they dropped 7-0 and 5-1 finals to Samford.

Carly Mattson‘s second home run of the season, with one out in the top of the fourth inning of the second game, ended a run of 33 1/3 innings without scoring a run for the Lady Govs (6-31) – the longest such streak since the 2000 season.

APSU Women's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityOwens Cross Roads, AL – After a spring that saw it continually build momentum, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team will seeks its first Ohio Valley Conference title when it travels to The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove, Monday-Wednesday, to participate in the 2016 league championship.

The three-day, 54-hole tourney—18 holes per day—will be played on The Highlands Course, a challenging par-72, 6,050-yard Scottish Links layout.

APSU Women's Track and Field - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University track and field put on a show as hosts of the annual Austin Peay Invitational, hosting one of the bigger fields in meet history at Fortera Stadium.

The Governors hosted a number of area teams, including conference foes Murray State, UT Martin, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech at the annual event.
