Re-thinking values in the wake of tragedy

In reading about the crushing death of a security guard at Wal-Mart on Black Friday, combined with the number of injuries, and now a lawsuit against the retailer, and then reading of the shooting at a Toys ‘r Us store, I began to feel as if I were moving through an episode of The Twilight Zone. All this tragedy for a TV? A Computer? The latest video game components?

My stomach churns, and I realize again why the sheer lunacy of queuing up in the wee hours of morning for a bargain has never been on my agenda. Never will be. Holiday shoppers beware!

The holiday shopping season is now upon us. Every retail store, and shopping mall is raising their big ‘Sales of the Season’ signs and each competing for your dollar. Your children’s eyes are beginning to develop that twinkle about them, and letters to Santa are beginning to be drafted.

Before you set your alarm clock this Black Friday to storm the stores for all the latest toys please take this into consideration.

August 2007 Mattel toys recalls 18.6 million toys that “might contain tiny, dangerous magnets or toxic lead paint”. These magnets inside of the toys if swallowed have been known to connect across intestines and rip a child’s bowls apart.

Black Friday: Retailers cast wary eye on first shopping day of the holiday season

Layoffs. Lost jobs. Shrinking 401ks and investment portfolios. The mortgage implosion. A summer of skyrocketing gas prices and concerns over utility costs as cold winter weather settles over most of the nation. Escalating food prices. A general and broad-based unease about the economy.

All of the above are contributing to a cautionary view of Black Friday, that riotous frenzied day-after-Thanksgiving start of the Christmas shopping season. Stores across the country began offering severe discounts in late October and through most of November; they will now offer even larger price cuts in hopes of salvaging what is shaping up as a bleak Christmas in retail.

Though the usual lines of early bird buyers are expected to camp outside stores where deep discounts and special items will be offered, these shoppers will be choosier and less willing grab, charge it and run. Toys “R” Us beautiful baby contest and other pictures

Last Saturday, Toys “R” Us together with Clarksville Online and other local sponsors held a beautiful baby contest. We had requested information needed to write an article from our liaison at Toys “R” Us and did not receive it. We needed for them to provide a list of entrants, the list of official winners, and a copies of the photographs that the Toys “R” Us photographers took of each baby. We had hoped to have our story written and published the next day, instead we spent the last week waiting for a response from them and did not receive it. So we are going to go ahead and publish the pictures that we took at the Clarksville Toys “R” Us on that day.

If we published a picture that you are personally in, feel free to contact us, identify the picture, and we will be happy to send you the full resolution copy so that you may get prints of the image. Family and friends should contact the people in the pictures. We apologize for the lack of other information, and for the delay however it was totally beyond our control.
