APSU Governors Football’s Defense dominates first scrimmage

Austin Peay State University Governors SportsClarksville, TN – A stingy defense and solid run game highlighted Austin Peay State University’s first scrimmage, Friday, under new head coach Kirby Cannon.

The Govs defense intercepted four passes, with Tyreon Clark and walk-on Nicholas Smart returning two for touchdowns, in the roughly 60-play scrimmage at Governors Stadium that worked on multiple situational packages. According to Cannon, the defense’s dominance was hardly a surprise.

Austin Peay Governors Football’s Antwaun has proven to be a Major pain to opponents

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – The smallest man in Austin Peay’s secondary is also the most respected player on the Governors defense.

Little has come easy for senior safety Antwaun Majors, a 5-9, 170-pound fifth-year senior. Despite twice earning Region Defensive Player of the Year Award and the prestigious Nick Coutras Award while at Mt. Juliet High School, he came to Austin Peay as a walk-on.

Austin Peay Lady Govs Golf captures OVC Academic Award for fourth straight year

Austin Peay State UniversityNashville, TN – For a fourth straight year, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team has earned the Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Award for its respective sport.

Lady Govs golf was one of two APSU teams to earn such distinction, joining the Governors Tennis team. The team academic achievement awards are presented annually in each OVC-sponsored sport to the member institution’s team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher-the Lady Govs golf team had seven members earn such status while the men’s tennis team had five.

Austin Peay Governors Football’s Red-White game set for Thursday

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TNAustin Peay State University’s football team will culminate spring practice 7:00pm, Thursday, with the Red-White Spring game, in Governors Stadium.

The 69 players were selected through a draft after Tuesday’s practice. Head coach Rick Christophel divided up his 14 seniors and then placed them in charge of the draft.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – With spring break behind it, Austin Peay State University’s football team, buoyed by a veteran group returning, will hit the football field for spring football practice. Practice will commence 3:45pm, Tuesday, in Governors Stadium.

The Govs will practice two days—Tuesday and Wednesday—in shorts before putting on the pads this weekend.

Local product Rutledge transfers to Austin Peay Football program from Navy

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TNAustin Peay State University has announced Jeremiah (J.J.) Rutledge has transferred to the Governors football program from the Naval Academy.

The Clarksville native and former Northeast High School star wide receiver and defensive back will have four seasons of eligibility remaining. He is projected as a cornerback and kick return specialist for the Governors.
