After primary apathy, long but fast moving voters lines are “a breath of fresh air”

Kudos to the Election Commission staff for keeping the lines flowing smoothing during these first days of early voting.

As I have for nearly 40 years, I cast my vote today, though having seen the crowds, which includes hundred of new voters, waiting to exercise the privilege and right to vote, I was wondering just how long it would take. Less than 15 minutes. With at least 50 people ahead of me.

Approximately 100 people stand in line waiting to vote.Six stations have trained staff ready and waiting to check your credentials, verify your ID, and move you on to a hallway where the ballot is posted for you to review (if you haven’t already). From there, it’s a few steps to the machines, and a few buttons to push. «Read the rest of this article»

Bizet’s “Carmen” dazzled viewers

Anna Caterina Antonacci as Carmen

A little-heralded screening of a great opera, Georges Bizet’s Carmen, played Clarksville Thursday evening, the first of four British productions that will air in the next three weeks. Carmen was, in a word, “stunning.”

The Carmike 10 at Governor’s Square Mall did little advertising of this show, staged at Covent Garden with the London Symphony. The Met: Live in HD offers a global broadcast series of 11 operas from its New York Stage. That series plays two stadium theaters in Nashville, often with standing room only crowds that include large contingent of Clarksville classical fans. The Met series is highly publicized; I hope that the Carmike 10 (or the city’s  Great Escape 16) would do the same. «Read the rest of this article»

State Senators Harper, Marrero to attend early voting rally

Montgomery County Democratic Party

Montgomery County Democratic Party

The Montgomery County Democratic Party will host a “get out the vote” rally Saturday at 10 a.m. at Veteran’s Plaza. State legislators  and local candidates will join the event in an effort to energize and encourage early voting, which if the first day of early voting is any indicator, will be encouragement falling on willing ears.

After the rally, the group plans to enter the Election Commission as a group and vote for the candidates of their choice.

On Wednesday, the early voting line extended out the door and down the covered walkway, with as many as 60-80 people in line at any given time.
