Matthew Walker Health Center announces revival of Double Dutch Fitness Initiative

It is a common complaint that our young people do not get enough physical exercise. Too soon in their academic career playtime at recess is done away with and static sitting dominates their time. The Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center is seeking to change that paradigm. The health center conglomerate has announced plans to revive the ‘Double Dutch’ fitness initiative in Middle Tennessee community schools.

Nashville, TN: Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center and the Department of Health and Human Services Regional IV Offices in Atlanta, Georgia are committed to advancing the health of the Nashville Community.  The Center was awarded a grant to facilitate the Reviving Double Dutch Program in the Nashville Community, the program seeks to motivate, educate and empower children ages 8 to 18 years old to increase their free-time physical activity levels.

“Years ago Double Dutch was an activity that brought you together with neighborhood friends. It was a fun, non-competitive way of getting in some exercise. We didn’t think of it as exercise it was just something to do. Well, we want to bring this activity of fun and exercise to the Nashville community. We are always looking for new ways to engage the community and change the direction onto healthier days”,  says Katina Beard , Director, Institutional Advancement and Community Initiatives.

At the Double Dutch camp hosted by Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center at the Northwest YMCA located at 3700 Ashland City Highway, the training will be done by Tommy Amico of the Department of Health and Human Services. He has many years of double Dutch training experience under his belt. On February 28, the Center will host another camp at Hadley Park Gym, and the training will be conducted by members of USA Jumprope; they are sending 14 trainers from various states, with many years of double Dutch competition experience.   The two camps are for the participants and coaches in the program. The camps will prepare the coaches and participants to compete in the final competition in April, 2009 with the winning team receiving $1,000.00 sponsored by 92Q, a Cumulus Broadcasting Station.
