Fort Campbell responds to WMD attack during training exercise


A suspicious package is found outside the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division… The call goes out… Emergency crews and first responders are mobilized… A second package is found. White powder… 21 soldiers may be injured … or have been contaminated… Facts are slowly coming in… The area is cordoned off… A decontamination station is setup… EOD responds…

This was just training, but it could have easily been real

If this were a real world situation and the emergency responders at Fort Campbell were not properly trained, confusion would be the order of the day. But due to realistic training exercises like the one held today, they are indeed ready to handle a real world WMD situation anywhere on the military base.

Danny Green served the role of the Site Coordinator. He also serves as the Emergency Manager for Fort Campbell. APSU professor and Poet Blas Falconer wins national award

Austin Peay State University LogoBlas Falconer, a professor at Austin Peay State University, has been named a recipient of the Maureen Egan Writers Exchange Award, according to Poets and Writers magazine.

Falconer, along with fellow Tennessee fiction writer, Jeanne McDonald, were selected for the award.

The Maureen Egan Writers Exchange Award gives emerging writers the opportunity to interact with the literary community in New York City. Writers of poetry and fiction are annually chosen from one state to participate in the competition. Treasury, HUD announce housing grants funded through Recovery Act


Grants Will Increase Jobs, Provide Boost to Local Housing Economies

hudlogoWashington – As part of an innovative partnership aimed at job creation and easing the pressures on the housing market, the Department of the Treasury and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today jointly announced programs that will provide billions of dollars in recovery funds to spur the development of thousands of affordable housing units in states around the country. Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (The Recovery Act), the programs together will provide approximately $5 billion for states to finance the acquisition and construction of affordable housing for working families.

Through the Recovery Act, the Treasury Department will now for the first time provide state housing agencies resources from which they will in turn provide cash assistance to developers of qualified affordable housing developments to fill the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LITC) gap. The program will increase the supply of newly constructed or recently renovated affordable housing units for families – affordable housing that otherwise may not have come to market due to current economic conditions. «Read the rest of this article»

Governor Bredesen announces grants to five Tennessee airports


Grants awarded through TDOT’s Aeronautics Division

tdot-logo-lgNashville, TN-Governor Phil Bredesen announced on May 1st that $548,604 in Aeronautics Grants have been approved for five Tennessee Airports.

“Our local airports are vital to the economy and travel system of Tennessee,” said Bredesen.  “Investing in our airports helps keep them competitive and efficient at meeting the needs of businesses and travelers.  I’m pleased to support their continued improvement.”

Kanovsky, Kovar, and Trasviña sworn in as HUD Assistant Secretaries


hudWASHINGTON – Helen Kanovsky, Peter Kovar and John Trasviña were sworn in Monday as the General Counsel, Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, respectively at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. All three were unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 1, 2009.
