APSU Dept. of Communication hosts student debate forum

Austin Peay State University LogoThe Austin Peay State University Department of Communication will host its third student debate forum from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27 in the Clement auditorium. The debate is free and open to the public.
The topic for the debate is Resolved: APSU smoking regulations are fair to all students. The Fall 2009 AP Debate Forum will focus on campus policy, asking students to discuss pertinent issues related to the campus smoking policy. The debate will be conducted in a two-round series, with four selected students debating the assigned topic. Other students, apart from the selected debaters, will have the opportunity to speak from the floor following the debate.

Participating students will be chosen from all on-campus Fundamentals of Public Speaking courses. Public speaking is a TBR core requirement for all students, which will allow this debate to reach students in every major and at every stage in their academic career. The AP Debate Forum is an attempt to engage students outside the classroom, as well as to provide them with a platform to use skills and competencies learned in the public speaking course.

In an entertaining twist, audience members will be asked to participate in the debate with nonverbal feedback. Student members of the audience will be provided with a visual tool and asked to show them when in favor of an argument and remove them when not in favor. This feedback is designed to demonstrate effectiveness of persuasive argument and changes in opinion following political debates.
