Checkup time as Lady Govs host Cumberland in only preseason test

apsugovernorsTwenty-Four practice days will be put to the test when Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team hosts Cumberland in a 7 p.m., Monday, preseason contest at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last season’s team that posted a 17-16 overall record but won the Ohio Valley Conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. However, the Lady Govs will be searching for a replacement at center where April Thomas held court last season.

In addition, Austin Peay will be seeking answers at point guard where redshirt freshman Neika Smith joins the team after missing last season due to an injury. The Lady Govs also will use sophomore Whitney Hanley and junior Brooke Faulkner to run the offense at times.

Senior forward Nicole Jamen rejoined the Lady Govs during October’s final days after playing for the Cameroon National Women’s Basketball team at the FIBA Africa Championship for Women in Madagascar. A preseason All-OVC pick, she returns after averaging 11.2 points and 6.5 rebounds a game last year.

Joining her on the preseason All-OVC squad was junior forward Ashley Herring, who averaged 11.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season.

Cumberland has one regular-season contest under its belt, a 86-40 victory against Hiwassee, last Monday. Sophomore guard Brittany Cash led the Bulldogs with 17 points and sophomore forward Simone Ryan added a 10-point, 12-rebound performance. Monday’s contest also is a homecoming for junior forward Keshia Brown, a Clarksville High School graduate. Head coach Jeremy Lewis is in his first season with the Bulldogs, who were picked to finish seventh in the TranSouth Conference preseason poll.
