Lady Govs seek to right ship as conference schedule begins Thursday

apsugovernorsMired in a four-game losing streak, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team will seek to get back on a winning track when it hosts Southeast Missouri in a 5:15 p.m., Thursday, Ohio Valley Conference opener.

Austin Peay stands at 1-5 this season following a pair of losses at the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament last weekend. The Lady Govs showed flashes of their potential in both games but could not put together complete 40-minute performances in either contest. While its rebounding was superior in the tournament – averaging 47 rebounds per game – the Lady Govs defense allowed both opponents to shoot better than 45 percent from the field.

Junior Ashley Herring enters conference play after receiving all-tournament recogntion at Vanderbilt. She scored 21 points in both contests and made an impressive 9-of-16 from three-point range in the two outings. Junior Nicole Jamen (18 points, 11 rebounds) and sophomore Jasmine Rayner (18 points, 17 rebounds) each posted double-doubles in the Lady Govs loss to Northwestern State.

Southeast Missouri also had a tough November road, playing a pair of teams who have not suffered a loss this season (Indiana State and Green Bay). The Redhawks enter league play with a 2-3 overall record, but with both victories occurring at the Show Me Center.  Southeast Missouri committed 29 turnovers against Green Bay in its last outing, Sunday, and are averaging 22.6 turnovers per game this season.

Freshman Jasmine Davis scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Redhawks against the Phoenix, making nine free throws. She is the team’s leading scorer through five games, averaging 10.6 points per game with 23 of her 53 points coming at the free-throw line where she is making 82.1 percent of her attempts.
