APSU Women’s Basketball: Slow start dooms Lady Govs at UALR

apsugovernorsLITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team got off to a slow start and could not catch up late in a 82-54 loss at UALR, Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Stephens Center.

UALR (5-4) scored on eight of its first 11 possession to build a 10-point, 17-7 lead just 6:39 into the contest. The Trojans followed that by scoring on of its next 11 as their lead hit 20 points, 33-12, just seven minutes later.

Austin Peay (3-6) had few answers for the UALR offensive onslaught, going nearly six and a half minutes without a field goal as the lead increased from four points to 14 points during the drought. The Lady Govs trailed by 27, 45-18, at halftime.

The second half was effectively a stalemate as the Lady Govs deficit fluctuated throughout the frame, never getting below 24 and never higher than 32 before settling on the final margin
Junior Ashley Herring led Austin Peay with 16 points, scoring 12 in APSU’s 36-point second half. Sophomore Whitney Hanley added 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior Nicole Jamen chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

The Lady Govs made just 35.8 percent (19-of-53) of its field goals and committed 21 turnovers.

Junior Chastity Reed led UALR with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Nine different UALR players scored in the contest as they made 54.2 percent (32-of-49) of its field goals.
Austin Peay continues its two-game road trip with a 2 p.m., Saturday contest at Troy.
