Homemade Chai

Do you love some chai on a chilly evening?  Oh, I do. I love it so much that I decided to make my own. Of course its cheaper than laying down three or four bucks a cup, but the best part is that it is absolutely delicious!

I started by searching the internet for information about what is actually in chai.  I learned that there are literally hundreds of recipes if not thousands.  So I found a great basic recipe and then tweaked it to work for me.

What I ended up with is a wonderfully warm spicy drink that is both sweet and fragrant.

The Ingredients In Spiced Chai

  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3/4 teaspoon Ground Cardamom
  • 12 Whole Cloves
  • 1/2 inch fresh Ginger Root, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon Anise oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fennel seed
  • 2 tablespoons English Breakfast Tea or 4 tea bags
  • 2 cups Water
  • 4 cups Whole milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Making The Chai

Crush the cloves and fennel seeds and bring the water to a simmer, add all the spices, oil and extract to the simmering water. Add the tea and allow the contents to simmer for 10 minutes.

Strain the tea and add it back to the pan. Add sugar, stir then add milk. Heat to the temperature you prefer and serve! Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
