First Thursday ArtWalk rescheduled due to weather, to be held on second Thursday this month

You’re invited to join the merchants of Historic Downtown Clarksville for The monthly Art Walk, on January 14th from 5 – 8 p.m. Kendall Welsh from ARTifacts sent us this information about January’s artistic extravaganza.

The Downtown Artists Co-op will open a new membership show called “Rumors of Spring”.  As you might guess the intent of the show is to provide the mental stimulus to get us through the blue, cold months of January and February by shifting our concentration to thoughts of the coming spring.  Each DAC member is encouraged to provide one to three pieces of art depicting her/his interpretation of the first indications of spring.   The reception will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 7 in conjunction with the First Thursday Artwalk in Beautiful Downtown Clarksville.

ARTifacts Emporium will feature the artwork of Jillian Romano and the handy work of Honey Dog Studios.  Jillian Romano received her BFA in Photography from Austin Peay State University and is now an instructor of photography for the APSU CSA program.  She works in black & white film, digital and multi-media.  Jillian’s unique perspective and use of vibrant color come together to create her current collection of cityscapes which will be displayed at ARTifacts all month.

Suta Lee, a professor of art in painting at Austin Peay State University and recent graduate of Austin Peay, Lindsey Davis Ward, will be exhibiting their work at the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery on 116 Strawberry Alley through January 30th.

Suta Lee’s work is based on his impressions of the landscapes in Tennessee. These small, intimate scale oils provide a window looking at the many faces and colors of Tennessee landscapes. The gestural style of using thick paint and bold brush marks gives these painting an almost three dimensional feel. Lee has been painting around Tennessee for the past ten years and is Lee’s ongoing search for tranquility and serenity in nature.  Lee will also be exhibiting his recent photographic work of  “Masquerade” series.

Ward’s work is inspired by the waters surface and its natural tendency to distort the objects below, Ward uses paint to explore the wonderful abstractions that take place on the human flesh when submerged in the water.  Her drawings and paintings carry on a life of their own as the viewer gets lost in vivid color and dramatic brush strokes.

Beth Ryan will be featured at Hodgepodge this month.  Beth Ryan and her husband, Tim, have lived in Clarksville for two and one-half years.  Originally from Marion, OH, she graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in drawing/painting/printmaking. She put my art on hold while raising her kids and working for a non-profit agency, then the public school system with special needs children.  She’s taught pre-school here in Clarksville and is very involved with performing in ensembles and bands with her flute.  She and her husband built an art studio in their backyard and Beth as returned to painting.  She looks forward to sharing her recent work.

Ingredients will feature 2 groups for this month’s art walk.  Relish, owned by Sue Beauchamp and Mary Reed, is a new deli located on Hwy 76 by-pass.  Relish opened in November and serves salads, sandwiches, soups, gelato, desserts and fruit tea along with banana and bread pudding.  Relish has also started to do some catering and will be baking custom cakes.  Sue and Mary decide to provide the south side of town with more food choices including healthy options with many being homemade.  Samples will be provided for your tasting pleasure.

Also at ingredients will be Evon’s Creations. Evon’s owner Yvonne Wright began crafting jewelry as a young girl; but had to put it down for awhile, picking it up on occasion for relaxation; but one day she realized others really appreciated what she created.  She began selling her jewelry which helped her family survive during the economic downturn.  Yvonne loves crafting jewelry and working with pearls and turquoise, enjoys making others happy with a piece she creates and thanks God for her ability.  Please stop in and see Yvonne’s beautiful pieces.

Rogate’s Boutique will host Robert Harrell.  Robert is a self taught artist with a B.A. in English Literature and a B.S. in Nuclear Medicine Technology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He has travelled the world and his works often reflect influences of music, religion, politics and life experiences.  In his words, “I am not sure what qualifies as art, but, when I paint I try to create something I like to look at and inject something that means something to me.  If I achieve those two things then I’ll take my chances.”
