APSU Hosts Annual Guitar Festival

Austin Peay State University and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts present their annual guitar festival featuring guest artist concerts and master classes.

The concerts take place at 7.30 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8-9 in the Music/Mass Communication Building Concert Hall and are free and open to the public.

The first concert will feature APSU adjunct guitar professor Roger Hudson and guest artist Stephen Aron in a performance of original compositions for the guitar. Tuesday’s concert will feature guest artist Lily Afshar.

In addition to his work at APSU, Hudson is adjunct guitar professor at Middle Tennessee State University. He is a featured columnist for Fingerstyle Magazine and a published author with Mel Bay Publications.

Aron directs the guitar program at the University of Akron, Ohio, and is the founder and director of the guitar program at Oberlin College, Ohio. Described by the New York Times as “cultivated and musical,” he performs regularly throughout the United States and Canada and recently completed a tour of Italy. His original compositions and arrangements for the guitar are published by Tuscany Editions and Mel Bay Publications. His CD recordings have been described as “stunning” (Guitar Review), “superbly produced” (Soundboard), “warmly recommended” (Fanfare) and “inspired” (Classical Guitar).

Afshar directs the guitar program at the University of Memphis. She was born in Tehran and studied at the Boston Conservatory, New England Conservatory and Florida State University. She also took part in the master class with maestro Andres Segovia held at the University of Southern California. Her several CD recordings have been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
