Lady Govs unable to tackle outsized task, fall at Tennessee

APSU Governors LogoKNOXVILLE – Junior Ashley Herring scored 21 points but could not lead Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team past a taller Tennessee team, falling 75-42 in first round action of the 2010 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, Saturday afternoon at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Tennessee (31-2), the Memphis Regional’s top seed, scored the game’s first 15 points and did not look back. The Lady Volunteers used their height to maximum advantage during that opening run, scoring 12 points inside the paint.

Austin Peay (15-18), the region’s 16-seed, did not score until Herring hit a putback with 13:18 remaining. She followed that with consecutive layups to cut the Tennessee lead to 19 points. However, the Lady Vols scored 15 of the next 19 points to build a 20-point, 30-10, lead with 7:41 remaining.

Herring made 4-of-6 from the field in the opening half and finished the game 8-of-14 overall. Her 21-point performance led all scorers and was the second-best NCAA tournament performance by a Lady Govs player all-time.

Sophomore Jasmine Rayner scored eight points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

Austin Peay was held to 30.2 percent (16-of-53) shooting, including 3-of-14 from three-point range where Herring made two of three and sophomore Whitney Hanley added a 1-of-4 effort.

Sophomore Kelley Cain led Tennessee with an 18-point, 12-rebound effort in 22 minutes. Sophomore Angie Bjorklund added 14 points, making 4-of-12 from the three-point line, and sophomore Shekinna Strickland added 12 points.

Tennessee shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the field, but made just 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from three-point range.
