APSU Men’s Baseball: Govs meet defending champion Panthers in OVC week two

APSU Governors LogoFresh off an OVC-opening series victory, Austin Peay’s baseball team takes to the road for its next two conference weekends, beginning with a three-game set at defending regular-season champion Eastern Illinois. Due to the impending Easter holiday, the series begins with a 1 p.m., Friday doubleheader followed by a 1 p.m., Sunday contest at Coaches Stadium in Charleston, Ill.

The Govs opened OVC play with a 2-1 series victory against Murray State, last weekend. However, Austin Peay plays its next eight games, encompassing two OVC series, on the road where it has just one win in seven tries.

Austin Peay’s offense has warmed up with the weather, posting 10 or more hits in each of its last four contests – a .369 batting average – while averaging 10.5 runs per game. The Govs pitching staff, meanwhile, is still struggling to keep runs off the board, allowing a 6.35 earned-run average during that same four-game span.

Eastern Illinois began league action at Eastern Kentucky and suffered a series sweep, their first since 2008. The Panthers return to Coaches Stadium where they have played just one game this season, downing Chicago State, March 23. Eastern Illinois is off to a 4-19 overall start, losing its last five outings and 10 of its last 11 entering the weekend.
