The City of Clarksville has partnered with the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System to ensure the safety of children traveling to and from school. The City of Clarksville provided grant funds received from the Federal Highway Administration Program to develop a Safe Routes to School program.
The SRTS grants are used to help improve the safety of school walking routes, develop fun ways to encourage more children to use those routes, and recruit parents and neighbors to accompany children to school. The program will also look at ways to slow traffic down around schools and teach children health and traffic safety to include recognizing dangerous situations (aggressive animals, stalkers, reckless horseplay along busy streets, crossing at intersections, etc.)
These grants will allow 7 public schools in Clarksville to receive crosswalk improvements. Kick-off events are scheduled for the two schools that have been completed thus far.
Children will receive a FREE t-shirt, backpack, water bottle and pedometer at these events!
Minglewood Elementary Kick-off Event
- The first event will be held at the Learning Center North (back building of Northwest High School) on Thursday, May 6th from 5:30 –7pm.
- The following morning, Friday, May 7th at 7:30 am, we will have a Walking School Bus event. Parents and children who walk to school are encouraged to wear their program t-shirt and meet in the parking lot of the Park Lane Nazarene Church (next door to Minglewood Elementary) to walk to school together.
Moore Magnet Elementary Kick-off Event
- Our next event will be held at the Learning Center (Directly behind Moore Magnet School) on Tuesday, May 11th from 5:30 –7pm.
- The following morning, Wednesday, May 12th at 7:30 am, Parents and children are encouraged to wear their program t-shirt and meet in the parking lot of the Clarksville Housing Authority on Richardson Street to walk to school together.
Mike Harris, CMCSS Director of Schools, along with other City officials and community members are expected to attend these celebrations.
