APSU President Tim Hall, who nominated Hand for the award, said, “Hand’s financial support of the university expands over a long period of time. His lifetime giving is almost one million dollars and includes significant support of APSU athletics, with a special emphasis on our baseball program since the baseball park is named in his father’s memory, Raymond C. Hand. Austin Peay’s Beatrice Hand Village, a relatively new housing complex, is named in memory of his mother.”

The award, presented by the Tennessee Board of Regents each year to individuals, companies or organizations, is based on the following criteria:

  • Generous giving of time and resources to TBR institutions.
  • Major influence on volunteers to become involved in fundraising.
  • Effective example setting; actively promotes importance of supporting higher education.
  • Ethical leadership in philanthropy.
  • Exceptional civic responsibility and integrity.

As a small businessman in Clarksville and the middle Tennessee area, Hand has also been a longtime supporter to the local community through local charities and organizations. His civic involvement includes serving on the board of directors of the Clarksville Academy and being president of that board in 1982 and 1984. He has also served on the board of directors of the Clarksville Department of Electricity Power Board, the Montgomery County Museum Board and the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce Board.

Over the course of his career, Hand has been recognized by many professional and community organizations for his contributions both as a leader and a supporter of his industry and community. In 1995, he was voted Small Businessman of the Year by the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce. In 2000, he was the recipient of the National Award for Community Involvement by the National Beer Wholesalers Association. In 2004, Hand was awarded the William O. Beach Award as Citizen of the Year for Montgomery County. In 2006, he was awarded the Gracey Award for outstanding service to the Customs House Museum. He is a sustaining member of the Boy Scouts Council, a member of the Board for Alcohol and Drug Prevention, Clarksville Civitan Club, the Austin Peay State University Alumni Association and the Austin Peay Foundation Board of Directors.
