On May 1st and 2nd, 2010 Middle Tennessee was hit with storms that brought an unprecedented amount of rain. The rain quickly caused the Cumberland River, the Harpeth River and various creeks to rise and come out of their banks, flooding many parts of Nashville and some of the surrounding cities.

Americans plan to continue eat-at-home and frugal shopping habits in post recession

Survey finds 79 percent of consumers do not feel like the recession is over

OMAHA, NE,  — While the recession forced millions of Americans into the kitchen and to develop an eat-at-home mindset, a new survey(1) released today by ConAgra Foods (NYSE:CAG) one of North America’s leading food makers, shows that despite the ease on economic conditions, Americans are not soon to let go of their new habits. APSU senior named winner of recent Share a Smile contest

An Austin Peay State University senior is the winner of a recent contest designed to motivate college students to practice good oral health.

Amanda Michelle Brown, of Clarksville, won the 2010 APSU Share a Smile contest sponsored by Delta Dental of Tennessee. The contest was open to members of APSU’s Greek-letter fraternities and sororities.

Brown is a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She received a $1,000.00 monetary award for college expenses, Delta Dental also will give a donation to a Tennessee-based, oral health charity picked by Brown and her sorority. «Read the rest of this article»

IRS offers details on new Small Business Health Care Tax Credit

WASHINGTON, DC — The Internal Revenue Service  issued new guidance to make it easier for small businesses to determine whether they are eligible for the new health care tax credit under the Affordable Care Act and how large a credit they will receive.  The guidance makes clear that small businesses receiving state health care tax credits may still qualify for the full federal tax credit. Additionally, the guidance allows small businesses to receive the credit not only for regular health insurance but also for add-on dental and vision coverage.

Notice 2010-44, posted  on IRS.gov, provides detailed guidelines, illustrated by more than a dozen examples, to help small employers determine whether they qualify for the credit and estimate the amount of the credit. Step, dance competition held

This past Saturday, May 15th local high school teams and youth groups competed in a step/dance competition in front of a crowd of at least 250 members of our very supportive Clarksville community at the Emmanuel Family Life Center.

The participants kept audience members engaged with stunning dance and step moves. In the end Kenwood High  school JROTC took 1st place, followed by Northeast with 2nd and SMAC (Sisters Making A Change) with 3rd place. Baseball: Govs meet Lipscomb to close out non-conference slate

Austin Peay State University’s baseball team will close its current 10-game road trip when it meets Lipscomb in a 6:00 pm, Tuesday contest at Dugan Field that will be the team’s final non-conference tilt in 2010.

Austin Peay (24-25) is 2-8 during its current road trip which stretches back to an April 28th contest at Belmont. FEMA Disaster Assistance Tops $100 Million In First Two Weeks

ATLANTA, GA – More than $100 million in federal assistance has been approved for the survivors of Tennessee’s record-setting storms and flooding, just two weeks after President Barack Obama declared a federal disaster.

The amount includes $90.7 million in housing aid, such for rental assistance and home repairs, and $9.5 million for other needs such as personal property.

SBA Business Recovery & Disaster Recovery Centers now open in Clarksville, TN

ATLANTA – The U.S. Small Business Administration announced its opening of a Business Recovery Center in Clarksville today to assist business owners impacted by the recent severe storms, flooding, high winds and tornadoes that began on April 30.  The Center is located in the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce, Green Bank and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. SBA’s Customer Service Representatives are available at the Center to answer questions and provide one-on-one assistance with completing the applications.

“Due to the amount of physical and economic losses caused by the disaster in Tennessee, we are encouraging affected business owners to meet individually with SBA representatives and find out how a low-interest disaster loan can help them recover,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center in Atlanta. «Read the rest of this article»
