APSU’s Spring Salon Series enriches the culture of Clarksville, TN

The Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts at Austin Peay State University presented  Poet Malcolm Glass in “Poetry’s Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed: A Reading with Commentary” on May 17th 2010. The event was part of their Spring Salon Series.  These once a month artistic interludes feature distinguished local artists and arts organizations, followed by refreshment and good conversation. All Spring Salon Series events are free of charge and no RSVP is necessary.

His reading was lively and entertaining, and involved frequent audience participation. With his gracious permission Clarksville Online is able to offer you video of his reading.

Malcolm Glass’s poems and stories have appeared in journals such as The Sewanee Review, Poetry, Prairie Schooner, Poetry Northwest and many others. He is the author of numerous chapbooks and his first book of poetry, “Bone Love,” published by the University Presses of Florida, has recently been reprinted. For a number of years, he directed the creative writing program at APSU, and he’s authored several textbooks on writing poetry.

Glass is a popular artist in the middle Tennessee community, writing plays and exhibiting his award-winning photography at local galleries. His readings and lectures are characterized by both his talent with words and his sense of humor while addressing the audience.

Here is one of his poems:

Forgetting

I loved my notebook of “times tables,”
especially the page of doubles,
even though Miss Northrup whined
over my margins, and complained

about the slant of my ones and sevens,
her mouth jerking like a vent’
dummy’s jaw. At the first squawk
I opened my notebook and drowned in the calm

sea of those easy numbers.
Miss Northrup
remained single. She never gave up
second grade. They say she died,
finally. I say the hell she did.

I sit here counting the numerous times
I was scolded to tears. They multiply
off the end of the page. And yet, as I
grow older, distance and numbers divide

those memories by half
each year. And by the time
I die, I may not have
a fraction of her left.
