Lady Govs to participate in 2010 preseason Women’s NIT

APSU Governors LogoFORT COLLINS, CO – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team is one of 16 teams selected to participate in the 2010 Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament it was announced, Tuesday.

The Lady Govs will not learn who their first-round opponent will be until the full bracket is announced in June. Other teams participating in the tournament include Central Florida, Charlotte, DePaul, Florida, Hampton, Iona, James Madison, Lamar, Missouri State, Purdue, South Dakota State, St. Francis (Pa.), Toledo, Utah Valley and Valparaiso. Fourteen of the 16 squads either won their conference tournament or saw postseason action in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments.

“We are thrilled to be among the 16 invited teams for the 2010 Preseason WNIT,” said Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels. “It is definitely a group of tremendous basketball teams and should make for an exciting WNIT tournament. I believe receiving the invitation shows where our program is headed and the hard work and dedication our players are putting in.”

Austin Peay will return four starters from last season’s squad, which won a second consecutive Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball tournament title. The Lady Govs were 15-18 overall but rallied to a third-place finish in the OVC regular-season race with an 11-7 record before posting three straight victories in the OVC tournament.

Among the returnees is the Lady Govs leading scorer, guard Ashley Herring, who averaged 15.0 points per game in 2009-10. The rising senior not only was a first-team All-OVC selection but also was named the OVC Tournament’s “Most Valuable Player.”

Also back is rising junior forward Jasmine Rayner also will return after averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game season. Guards Brooke Faulkner (6.1 ppg), a senior, and Whitney Hanley (8.8 ppg), a junior, also return for 2010-11.

The Lady Govs did lose graduating-senior Nicole Jamen, a forward who averaged 10.2 points per game (third on the team) and averaged a team best 8.5 rebounds per game.

It will be the Lady Govs second-ever appearance in the preseason WNIT. They were selected to the 1997 event following the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. Austin Peay lost that only previous appearance at Tennessee.

The 2010 Preseason WNIT will guarantee the Lady Govs three games. The first round will be played Nov. 12th – 13th. First-round winners continue on to play the second round, Nov. 14th – 15th, followed by the semifinals, Nov. 17th – 18th, and championship, Nov. 21st.

First-round losers will play two consolation games, Nov. 19th – 20th. All games will be hosted by participating teams and sites will be announced prior to the preceding round.

The remainder of the Lady Govs 2010-11 basketball schedule will be released in June.
