A video produced by a handful of Austin Peay State University sports broadcasting students for Lady Governors basketball has been nominated for a 2010 College Sports Media Award.
The College Sports Media Awards (CSMA) is a competition recognizing excellence in video production at all levels of college sports and is sponsored the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Sports Video Group (SVG). Out of more than 130 entries in three categories, the nominees represent outstanding college sports video productions from campuses across the country as well as commercial college sports videos produced by major television networks and advertising agencies.
APSU’s game opening video, titled “Play Ball Like A Girl,” is nominated in the Outstanding Promotional Video or Campaign: Collegiate 2. It is an empowering piece in which the APSU women’s basketball team takes a common negative sports metaphor, “You play like a girl,” and turns it into positive challenging new verbiage.
In addition to APSU, other schools with videos receiving nominations in this category are Appalachian State University, the University of Dayton and Seton Hall University, which had two videos nominated.
Under the supervision of APSU faculty member Caroline Sawyer, “Play Ball Like a Girl” was written, shot and edited by the following APSU Department of Communication sports broadcasting students: Maria Young, graduate assistant; Colin Bell, senior; Brad Averitt, senior; and Kevin Fee, graduate assistant.
“We are very honored to be among the nominees,” Sawyer said. “This video demonstrates the hard work that APSU and the students have put into our new sports broadcasting program. This is exactly the result that we look for from our students. In fact, Colin Bell, the editor of this video piece, will be the first student to graduate with a concentration in sports broadcasting this December. I am very proud of everything that these students have accomplished and am grateful for an administration that affords these students such rewarding opportunities.”
The winners will be announced at a presentation during the second annual College Sports Video Summit, scheduled for June 8th in Atlanta, GA The communication department will have 11 students attending the College Sports Video Summit as part of an upper division undergraduate course. The summit will allow students to participate in seminars and workshops presented by the top players in the college sports video industry.
“We traveled to this summit last year and found that it was an extremely rewarding experience for our students, giving them exactly the types of opportunities that our program strives for,” Sawyer said.
