Schwartz Opportunity Support Fund seeks donations to help troops keep in touch

Louisville, KY – Schwartz Opportunity Support Fund’s Calling Card?A?Thon enables our soldiers to stay in touch with their loved ones while serving our Country. For the third year the Schwartz Opportunity Support (S.O.S.) Fund has  “adopted” a group of young men and women (and their families) who are currently serving our country in Afghanistan. This year, they have proudly “adopted” the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell who deployed to Afghanistan April, 2010 joining the other units of the 101st which started deploying January 2010.

They are currently collecting donations to purchase discounted calling cards, allowing these soldiers to stay in touch with their families. From Memorial Day to Independence Day (5/28 – 7/4) they will be accepting donations of any amount.  Because S.O.S. Fund is the non-profit arm of Schwartz Insurance Group, 100% of donations collected go directly to support the soldiers of the 101st.

Prior to their deployment, Michael J. Morgan was invited by Capt. Alex Torres to attend their Casing of the Colors ceremony and met with LTC Douglas Vincent, battalion commander. Capt Torres also took the time to introduce him to several of the soldiers of the 32nd Cavalry.  It is their way of personally connecting to these troops, honoring their service and providing an avenue to show our appreciation.

“We understand that the 101st are essentially the “tip of the sword” in active battle.  Unfortunately, this has come at a cost.  As of June 25th, there have been 21 soldiers killed in action since the 101st started deploying in January 2010 and 15 deaths this month.  At difficult times like this, it is important to keep in touch with family and I can say this from firsthand knowledge.  My brother, LTC Stephen Morgan, is currently serving in Afghanistan.  Although he is not assigned to Fort Campbell, it is a much more personal involvement for me this year.”
