Sounds Complete Doubleheader Sweep Of Redbirds

Nashville SoundsMemphis, TN – The Nashville Sounds completed a sweep of a doubleheader against the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds with a come-from-behind 6-5 victory on Friday evening at AutoZone Park.

Nashville (47-41) moved to 4-6 in twinbill action with the sweep tonight, the club’s first doubleheader sweep this season.

Sounds starter Tim Dillard got off to a rough start as the Redbirds plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The bases were quickly loaded after the first three hitters reached base by two walks and one hit batter. Memphis’ first run came on a wild pitch by Dillard, while Ray Olmedo’s throwing error allowed the next two runs to score. Catcher Matt Pagnozzi capped the scoring rally with an infield groundout to second base that brought home Mark Shorey for a 4-0 lead.

The Sounds scored three runs to come within one in the top of the third inning at 4-3. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa began the scoring rally with a leadoff walk and advanced to third base on a Norris Hopper line drive single to right field. Extending his hitting streak to five games, Lorenzo Cain singled home De La Rosa for the first run. Later in the inning with outs, Joe Koshansky knocked a line drive two-run single to center field that scored Hopper and Cain to make it 4-3.

The Redbirds got one run back in the next frame as Kevin Howard hit a one-out double to center followed by Aaron Luna going to first after being hit by Dillard. Pagnozzi then singled to right field to bring home Howard for a 5-3 advantage.

Nashville came within one run again in the next inning. Olmedo singled to lead off the frame, moved to third on a base hit by Dillard, and then scored on a Hopper sacrifice fly that made it 5-4.

The Sounds scored two runs in the Nashville sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Pinch-hitting for Dillard, Adam Stern entered the game and belted a game-tying solo homer over the left field wall off Josh Kinney. The long ball was Stern’s second on the year and Nashville’s third pinch-hit homer.

Hopper recorded an infield single in the next at-bat, stole second base, advanced to third on a Memphis throwing error, and then scored the go-ahead run thanks to an RBI single by third baseman Mat Gamel.

Earning the win in his second spot start this season, Dillard (2-4) surrendered five runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks with one strikeout in five innings pitched. Mitch Stetter provided a shutout inning in relief, walking one and striking out on in the sixth. Chris Smith shut the door in the seventh, picking up his PCL-leading 18th save.

Memphis starter Oneli Perez allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Kinney (2-4) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs (one earned).

The Sounds and Redbirds will continue their series at 6:05pm CT on Saturday night in the fourth game of a five-game set at AutoZone Park in Memphis. Left-hander Sam Narron (3-3, 3.19) takes the mound for Nashville against Memphis right-hander David Kopp (0-3, 8.36).
