Janicek to assume Lady Govs volleyball head-coaching duties

Austin Peay State University GovernorsHaley Janicek, who served as Austin Peay State University’s assistant volleyball coach in 2009, has been elevated to lead the program for the upcoming 2010 campaign, the athletics department announced, Friday.

Janicek assumes the duties vacated by former head coach Mike Johnson, who resigned June 29th to pursue other professional opportunities.

“We are excited to have someone the caliber of Haley to assume the head coaching position,” said Cheryl Holt, senior women’s administrator. “She knows the kids and they know her. Haley also has a good feel about OVC volleyball. She is a great fit for our volleyball program and Austin Peay.”

Janicek completed her playing career at Idaho, where she was an outside hitter, in 2009. She was twice named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference (2007 and 2008) and twice was a second-team selection (2005 and 2006), the program’s first player to earn four such honors during their career.

Janicek left as the Vandals all-time kills leader, her 1,775 career kills ranking as the seventh most in WAC history. That number included 593 kills as a junior – the fourth best single-season performance in program history. Janicek also was a WAC all-academic selection each of her last three seasons.

“I am incredibly thankful to Mike Johnson, our former head coach, who prepared me to run a successful program,” Janicek said. “While he will be greatly missed, I am extremely excited for the opportunity I have been given by the athletic department to continue coaching at Austin Peay. My number one goal for the program is to continue on our same path of success and ensure an unforgettable student-athlete experience.”
