Royals Quiet Sounds, 3-1, on Thursday Night

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds lost to the division-rival Omaha Royals, 3-1, on Taco Bell Throwback Thursday at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Continuing his dominance against Nashville this season, Gaby Hernandez (7-5) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits while fanning a season-high 11 batters over 6 2/3 innings. Hernandez moved to 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA (1er/19.2ip) in three starts against the Sounds. In 16 starts against the rest of the PCL, he is 4-5 with a 6.65 ERA (69er/90.2ip).

Royals All-Star first baseman Kila Ka’aihue added to his team-leading RBI total, driving home all three Omaha runs on the night.

Nashville falls to 48-43 with the loss, as every member of the Sounds lineup struck out, totaling a season-high 15 times.

Omaha got on the board to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Royals third baseman Alex Gordon smacked a leadoff triple down the first base line into the right field corner to reach base. Ka’aihue followed with an RBI groundout to second base to score Gordon from third for the first score of the game.

The Royals added another run in the next inning for a 2-0 advantage. After Chris Waters retired the first two hitters to begin the frame, Omaha loaded the bases with a single, Joe Koshansky fielding error, and Gordon walk. Ka’aihue then recorded his second RBI of the game by picking up a bases loaded walk to score Ed Lucas from third.

After Gordon was hit by a pitch, Ka’aihue did more damage in the Omaha seventh, as the Royals first baseman smacked a two-out double to score Gordon from first base for a 3-0 deficit.

The Sounds scored their only run in the next frame to cut the lead to 3-1. Nashville designated hitter Erick Almonte doubled to center with two outs to reach base and scored on another doubled from Ray Olmedo.

Nashville began a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, as the first two batters reached base. Joe Koshansky walked to lead off the inning while Almonte reached base on a weak infield grounder to third. With Anderson De La Rosa representing the winning run at the plate, Omaha reliever Josh Rupe retired the next three consecutive batters while fanning De La Rosa to end the ballgame.

In his team-leading ninth quality start, Waters (5-6) picked up the tough loss. The left-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts over seven innings.

Tim Dillard provided 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball in relief, walking one while striking out two. Mitch Stetter added 1/3 frames and a strikeout.

The Sounds and Royals continue at 7:05 pm CT on Friday evening at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game set.  Left-hander Chase Wright (6-5, 3.73) takes the hill for Nashville against right-hander Luis Mendoza (5-7, 4.57).

Be sure to arrive early, as the first 2,000 fans through the turnstiles will receive a premium Sounds hat, thanks to Vanderbilt Sports Medicine.
