Sounds Blow Out Vegas, 12-2

Nashville Uses Eight-Run Inning To Post 2nd Straight Victory

Nashville SoundsLas Vegas, NV – Norris Hopper produced his second consecutive four-hit effort and Luis Cruz homered with four RBIs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 12-2 rout of the Las Vegas 51s on Monday evening at Cashman Field.

Hopper continued to swing a hot stick for Nashville, finishing 4-for-5. The veteran has produced multi-hit efforts in eight of his last 15 starts, batting .379 over that stretch (25-for-66). Cruz (3-for-5) homered for the second straight contest versus Las Vegas after not going deep since June 22. It marked the third time this season that Cruz has belted longballs in back-to-back games.

The Sounds (61-55) earned consecutive wins against the 51s by producing a double-digit scoring output for the second straight evening.

Las Vegas took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third inning against Sounds spot starter Tim Dillard as a pair of walks came back to haunt the right-hander.

After Brian Jeroloman and Jarrett Hoffpauir each drew a free pass to put runners on first and second with two outs, 51s first baseman Mike Jacobs ripped an RBI single to right to plate the first run of the contest.

The Sounds stormed out to an 8-1 lead in the fifth as the visitors matched their largest single-inning scoring output of the season, sending 12 men to the plate during an eight-run rally against 51s starter Lance Broadway.

Eric Farris and Mat Gamel (3-for-5) each contributed a two-run single in the frame, while Ray Olmedo later added a two-RBI double then scored the eighth and final run on Hopper’s second single of the inning.

Olmedo finished 3-for-5 for the Sounds to continue his hot hitting for Nashville. The veteran is batting .426 (20-for-47) over his last 15 tilts, recording a knock in 13 of them.

Jeroloman belted his second home run of the year in the bottom of the frame, a one-out solo shot to left off Dillard, to make it an 8-2 game.

Nashville tacked on a pair of runs against ex-Sound Zach Jackson with a two-out rally in the sixth. Gamel ripped a two-out double and the visitors filled the bases against the left-hander as Brendan Katin and Joe Koshansky drew back-to-back walks. Cruz then following with his second run-scoring knock of the evening, a two-run single to right that increased the visitors’ lead to 10-2.

The Sounds upped their advantage to 11-2 an inning later as Olmedo led off with a single, his third hit of the night, and later scored on catcher Martin Maldonado’s sacrifice fly.

Cruz wrapped up the night’s scoring in the ninth with a leadoff solo homer off 51s right fielder Jason Lane, who worked the final inning from the hill for Las Vegas. The roundtripper was the infielder’s eighth of the season.

Dillard (3-5) earned his second win in three starts for the Sounds this season after allowing two runs on five hits over five innings of work.

The Nashville bullpen worked four scoreless frames behind the right-hander to close out the victory, including two innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts by Carlos Villanueva.

Broadway (2-11) was saddled with the loss after surrendering eight runs on 10 hits over his five innings of work for the 51s.

The teams continue the series with another 9:05pm CT meeting on Tuesday. Left-hander Chase Wright (7-7, 4.50) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Las Vegas right-hander Marc Rzepczynski (5-5, 6.04).
