Govs to don full gear for first time Friday

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAfter two days in shoulder pads, Austin Peay State University’s football team will practice in full gear for the first time, 5:30pm, Friday, although the practice could be pushed back even later if the heat index is too high.

In fact, the Govs will practice in full pads during one time on both Friday and Saturday before a no-contact day, Sunday. The Govs then are scheduled to scrimmage for the first time, 9:00am, Monday, in Governors Stadium.

The good news is the weather is supposed to break, at least to a small degree, next week and by week’s end the high temperatures won’t reach 90. Even starting as early as 7:30am, the Governors still have battled the heat.  At 8:52am, Thursday, the temperature already was at 89 degrees with the humidity at 65 percent, making the heat index right around 100 degrees.

“We made too many mistakes offensively during the early part of (Thursday’s) practice,” APSU coach Rick Christophel said. “However, I was pleased how we finished up. I was pleased with how our guys fought through the heat at the end of practice.

“We are making progress.”

Governors Down to Two Quarterbacks:

Trox Greenwade, who joined the Governors last winter as a walk-on quarterback, has elected to leave the Governors football program. Greenwade was a  former White House High School standout who was attempting to comeback from shoulder surgery. His departure leaves the Governors with two quarterbacks, sophomore starter Jake Ryan and senior back up Trent Caffee. However, senior T.C. Jennings, who moved to wide receiver a year ago, has starting experience at quarterback.
