Bees Sting Sounds On Saturday, 9-4

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Nick Gorneault smacked two home runs to propel the Salt Lake Bees over the Nashville Sounds with a 9-4 victory at historic Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game set.

Dropping the first two games of the series to Salt Lake, the Sounds have now lost 11 of their last 17 games and trail the first-place Iowa Cubs by 6.5 games.

Gorneault went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored in the game, missing the cycle by a triple. Ryan Vogelsong (1-2) tossed a quality start in his first visit to historic Greer Stadium since the 2003 PCL postseason. The veteran right-hander allowed two runs on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six innings for the win.

The Bees took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as former Sound and 2001 PCL All-Star Luis Figueroa and Nick Gorneault cranked consecutive one-out doubles off Sounds starter Chuck Lofgren. Figueroa was a 2001 PCL All-Star for Nashville. Bees center fielder Terry Evans cranked his team-leading 14th home run over the left field wall in the next inning to give Salt Lake a 2-0 lead.

The Sounds plated their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Norris Hopper walked to leadoff the frame, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Ryan Budde, and then scored on a Martin Maldonado infield groundout to trim the lead to 2-1.

Gorneault followed with his first homer of the game that made it 3-1, his sixth of the season.

Nashville scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to again come with one run. Mat Gamel smacked a deep ball to right center that missed a home run by a couple of feet, causing the slugger to stop at second with a double. Gamel moved to third on an Erick Almonte infield groundout and scored as Luis Cruz hit a lazy fly ball down the right field line just over the first baseman’s reach.

Salt Lake put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh by plating four runs for a 7-2 lead. Mitch Stetter entered the game and gave up a walk and four singles as the Bees scored the first two runs. Later in the frame with two outs and the bases juiced, Brandon Kintzler relieved Stetter and surrendered a two-run single to Dwayne Bailey. As two more runs scored on the play to put Salt Lake up by four runs, Gamel threw out Budde from right field at third base to end the inning.

Nashville got a run back in the next frame, as Carlos Gomez led off the inning with a walk, stole second base, and then scored on an infield groundout from Gamel.

The Bees added insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Gorneault belted his second home run off the guitar-shaped scoreboard off Chris Smith. The two-run long ball was his second of the game and third of the series.

Joe Koshansky singled home Almonte for the club’s lone score in the bottom of the ninth inning.

In his first start since coming off the disabled list, Lofgren fell to 7-7 after allowing three runs on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts in three innings pitched. David Johnson fanned three while matching his season-high of three shutout innings in relief.

Stetter was touched for four runs in 2/3 of an inning in the game, as the left-hander has recorded a 13.51 ERA in his last six outings (6.2 IP). Kintzler pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and walking one.

Almonte posted the only multi-hit performance for Nashville with three hits. Gamel made two outfield assists in his fourth career game in the outfield.

The Sounds and Bees will play the third game of a four game series at 6:35pm CT on Sunday evening at historic Greer Stadium. Right-hander Tim Dillard (3-5, 4.88) will make the start for Nashville against Salt Lake right-hander Fernando Rodriguez (4-4, 5.27).
