Gateway Chamber Ensemble Performs FloodAid Concert on August 29th

Austin Peay State UniversityThe Gateway Chamber Ensemble will perform music from its new, critically acclaimed CD, “Wind Serenades,” on August 29th, in an effort to raise money for Clarksville’s Riverside Drive flood rehabilitation. The FloodAid Serenade Benefit Concert begins at 3:00pm that Sunday in the Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall on the Austin Peay State University campus. All proceeds will be used by Hands on Clarksville to support relief and restoration in areas of Clarksville and Montgomery County affected by the May 2010 flooding.

Hands On Clarksville is a volunteer-driven program that connects citizens with volunteer opportunities in their neighborhoods. Suggested donations may be made at the door of $12.00 for adults, $8.00 for students and $25.00 for a family of four.

Those who attend the concert will be treated to one of the finest live performances of Richard Strauss’s Serenade in E flat, Op. 7 and Mozart’s Serenade in B flat. The two works were recorded last year for the ensemble’s debut CD.

According to a review in Fanfare Magazine, one of the country’s leading classical music publications, the CD offers the best recording available of the Mozart piece.

“Of the recorded performances I know of the Mozart – which include those by the Academy of St. Marin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble and Consortium Classicum, I would pick the new Gateway Chamber Ensemble out of the pack, not only for its refined playing, but for finding that elusive balance between the music’s high-spirited playfulness and its sensuous soulfulness,” music critic Jerry Dubins wrote. “Merriment and melancholy mix in matched measure in Mozart’s masterpiece.”

The Gateway Chamber Ensemble, conducted by Gregory Wolynec, formed in 2008 and is composed of the talented performance faculty of APSU, as well as fellow professional musicians from Nashville and beyond.
