Sounds Top Zephyrs, 7-3, Win Fourth Straight

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Ray Olmedo was a triple away from the cycle in the Nashville Sounds’ 7-4 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Taco Bell Throwback Thursday at Greer Stadium in the second game of a five-game set.

It was the seventh time in the last 14 games that Olmedo produced multiple hits, as the veteran left-fielder went 3-for-4 with a home run and a double while driving in and scoring three runs out of the leadoff spot.

Nashville (70-62) has now won four consecutive games and eight of its last 11 contests, temporarily moving to 4.5 games behind first place Iowa in the PCL Northern Division.

The Sounds jumped on the board in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After Adam Stern and Mat Gamel reached base, professional hitter Erick Almonte crushed a two-run double down the left field line to plate both runners as Gamel slid under Neil Wilson’s  the tag at home plate.

In the next inning, Olmedo ripped a two-out double to center, stole third base, and then came home on an Eric Farris infield groundout that made it 3-0.

New Orleans got to Sounds starter Chase Wright in the top of the sixth inning, as the Zephyrs tied the contest with three runs. After Mike Lamb walked, Wright surrendered three consecutive singles to bring home the first two scores, followed by a Bryan Petersen sacrifice fly to centerfield for the tying run.

The Sounds went back ahead in the next frame at 7-3, scoring four runs off New Orleans reliever Matt Perterson. Luis Cruz smoked a line drive to center to reach base and advanced to second on a Norris Hopper walk. As Stern beat out an infield single with two outs, Cruz quickly rounded third and slid under the tag to score the first run of the inning. In the next at-bat, Olmedo blasted a three-run homer over the right field wall, his fourth long ball of the season and second in consecutive games played.

In a no decision, Wright gave up three runs on six hits while fanning seven over 5 2/3 innings pitched. David Johnson (2-1) picked up the win after retiring one batter with three pitches for the second consecutive night, as Donovan Hand earned the victory last night on three pitches.

Chuck Lofgren added two shutout innings, while Carlos Villanueva picked up his first career Triple-A save with a shutout ninth frame.

In his third start for New Orleans this season, James Houser allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks over three innings. Jorge Sosa added two scoreless innings in relief. Petersen (3-2) was touched for four runs in one inning for the loss.

The Sounds and Zephyrs will continue their series at 7:05pm CT on Friday at Greer Stadium in the third game of a five-game series.  The first 2,000 adults through the turnstiles at Greer will receive a premium Sounds T-Shirt, courtesy of Vanderbilt Sports Medicine. Veteran right-hander Marty McLeary (6-8, 6.82) will start for Nashville against New Orleans righty Brian Lawrence (10-8, 4.83).
