Governors open 2010 season tonight playing host to Cumberland University

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University Football gets started tonight at Governors Stadium, September 2nd, at 6:00pm againest Cumberland University. A victory against Cumberland would give Austin Peay back-to-back season-opening victories for the first time since the Govs defeated Kansas State, 26-22, in 1987 and Kentucky State, 20-14, in 1988.

Austin Peay State University Football - The GovernorsThe Govs rejoined the Ohio Valley Conference for football in 2007 after returning to scholarship football in 2006. The Govs finished sixth in the OVC a year ago with a 3-5 league mark and 4-7 overall.

The Govs are picked to finish tied for seventh in 2010.

Meanwhile, Cumberland University was picked fourth in the Mid-South Conference West Division in a poll of league coaches. Led by fifth-year coach Dewayne Alexander, the Bulldogs returns 17 starters from last season’s 5-6 club. The Bulldogs suffered three one-point losses a year ago.

Austin Peay is 26-45-2 in openers in its previous 73 years of football, including last season’s 34-23 home victory against Newberry. The Govs have won the season opener just four times in the last 15 seasons.

This is the sixth time Austin Peay has opened the season with Cumberland. The Govs are 3-2 in those games. The last time the two teams met in a Govs’ opener was in 2002, with the Governors winning 17-16.
