Austin Peay State University GovernorsFreshman Miranda Weed finished 58th to lead Austin Peay State University’s women’s cross country team to a ninth-place finish at the Belmont-Vanderbilt Cross Country Opener, Friday, at Percy Warner Park.

The Lady Govs scored 268 points to finish ninth. Co-host Vanderbilt scored 27 points to win the event. The Lady Govs finished in front of Ohio Valley Conference rival UT Martin which finished in 10th place.

Weed, in her first collegiate event, led the Lady Govs by finishing the four-kilometer course in 15:53.76 to finish 58th. Freshman Xiamar Richards was 66th (16:02.47). Junior Janelle Avery, one of two returnees from last season’s team, was 79th after finishing the course in 16:22.88. Also competing for the Lady Govs were freshman Kendra Kirksey (86th, 16:41.07), sophomore Alyssa Molnar (106th, 18:29.95), freshman Kayla Satterly (108th, 18:34.78) and freshman Shannon Christian (113th, 20:42.94).

“The women ran an impressive race, but it was an incredibly tough field,” said Lady Govs head coach Doug Molnar. “We looked at the top four-kilometer times in our program’s history and each of our top four ran a time that was in the top-20 all-time. Miranda’s time was the third-best in program history. It was a great way to start the season.”
