Austin Peay State University GovernorsJacksonville, AL – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Southeast Louisiana, Sunday, at the JSU/Adidas Gamecock Classic.

After opening the season winning five straight, the Lady Govs have now dropped two of their last three to fall to 6-2 overall. The Lions, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten streak to 6-0-1. Three Lady Govs were named to the JSU/Adidas Gamecock Classic All-Tournament team; Freshmen Andy Quiceno, Tatiana Ariza and Natalia Ariza.

“We played really well the first half, probably the best 45 minutes we’ve played all season,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “We just didn’t put away our chances. We looked like we got a little comfortable in the second half. We didn’t execute and they scored two goals. We had a number of chances we should’ve scored.”

Despite taking an early lead courtesy a Southeastern Louisiana own goal in the eighth minute, the Lady Govs could not capitalize offensively to see it through. Austin Peay outshot the Lions 18-13 and won the corner battle 6-5. The difference was in Southeastern’s keeper, Lacey Bockhaus, who made eight saves on the night. Bockhaus answered every Austin Peay challenge.

Natalia Ariza led the Lady Govs with four shots, two on goal. The Lady Govs shot early and often, but just couldn’t manage to find the back of the net. Freshman Emily Kink returned for her first significant playing time since an injury at Troy and recorded three shots. Senior Michelle Johnson and freshman defender Corey Osborn were each credited with two shots.

Freshman Joceline Quiceno had the Lady Govs best chance in the game when she broke through in the 61st minute into a one-on-one situation with Bockhaus. Unfortunately, Quiceno’s shot was stopped.

Austin Peay senior keeper Carley Newman made eight saves, while allowing two second-half goals. The equalizer came in the 69th minute from Southeastern’s Cambri Provost, while the gamewinner by Lauren Stillians, came in the 81st minute.

“We have to take advantage of chances when we have them in order to not let teams back into the game,” Guth said. “I give a lot of credit to Southeastern Louisiana because they didn’t quit. They kept plugging away and playing hard; it paid off for them. Hopefully, we’ll learn from this.”

The Lady Govs have a brief rest before opening a four-game home stand with a 7:00pm, Tuesday match against Alabama A&M at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
