Austin Peay State University GovernorsHuntington, W. VA – Freshman Anthony Bradley finished eighth to lead Austin Peay State University men’s golf team in an eighth-place finish at the Marshall Invitational.

The event boasted a strong field, evident in Ohio State’s 32-under par, first-place 820 aggregate. Xavier followed with an 827, while Virginia Tech improved four spots to finish third (838). Wright State (844) and Richmond (845) rounded out the top five. The Govs’ one-over par 853 was five shots behind Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Kentucky’s seventh-place 848.

Bradley was the only Govs golfer to finish inside the top 10 after firing three straight under-par rounds (70-69-68) to finish at six-under par. That left him 10 strokes off the pace of Xavier’s Sebastian MacLean, who won the tournament with a 16-under 197.

Junior Luke Sherrod joined Bradley with a one-under par (70-68-74) 212, despite shooting a final-round 74. Freshman Marco Iten posted a final round 73 to finish (70-72-73) with a two-over par 215.

Junior transfer Logan Loftus and senior Brian Balthrop got off to rough starts in the final round, shooting 42 and 40, respectively, on the front nine. Loftus improved on the back nine with a 31, while Balthrop shot a 35. Loftus finished with a six-over par 219 (74-72-73) to finish t-62nd. Balthrop, meanwhile, finished t-83rd at 12-over par (77-73-75=225).

“Other than Anthony, we had a disappointing final round,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “It was ideal scoring conditions today; the fairways were perfect and the greens were not very fast. We just got off to a bad start. I’m encouraged with one-over par. That’s not bad for this event, but we definitely have some things to build on.”

It marked the first time since the 2008 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate that Austin Peay had two players finish under par. In fact, prior to that event, the Govs did it twice that season – the 2008 Xavier Invitational and the 2008 Palmer’s Toyota Fall Intercollegiate.
