Harris fires 72 to finish in third place in MSU Drake Creek Invitational

APSU Women’s Golf

Austin Peay State University GovernorsLedbetter, KY – Chelsea Harris shot a final-round even-par 72, Tuesday, to finish in third place at the MSU Drake Creek Invitational, played at the 6,178-yard Drake Creek Golf Club.

The 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, Harris reached even par on literally an up-and-down day—Harris’ 18 holes fashioned seven birdies but also seven bogeys to go with four pars. The senior led the Lady Govs to their tourney low Tuesday, a 307.

But as a team the Lady Govs could not move up.  They opened the day in sixth place and ended the day in sixth, finishing the 54-hole tourney at 940, one stroke behind Belmont.

OVC rival Morehead State won the tourney with an 893, followed by Western Kentucky (909), Murray State (926) and Eastern Kentucky (931).

“Anytime you have someone shoot par you are going to have a good chance of a pretty good (team) score,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “The seven birdies certainly were a positive, but as a team we had a lot of birdies in this tournament.

“As I told the girls, we have to get rid of the big numbers—that hurt us the entire tournament. In our low four scores, we lost eight shots on the last four holes today.”

Senior Ashley Wathen rebounded from a second-round 81 to fire a 77, matching her first-round total for a three-round 235 (t/21st). Freshman Rachel Deaton continued her strong play, overcoming an opening-round 84 to shoot 76 and 78 in the final two rounds for 238 (t/29th). Junior Ashley Averitt shot a final-round 80 for a 243 total (t/35th).  Senior Catie Tucker shot an 82 for a 253 total (t/47th).

Senior Beth Ann Burns produced a solid tourney as an individual, shooting a final-round 81 to finish at 243 (t/35th).  Sophomore Tabitha Beard, coming off spring wrist surgery, shot a final-round 82 to finish with a 250 (t/43rd), the same score by freshman Tala Mumford, who bounced back from a college-career opening 91 to shoot 80-79 over the final two rounds.

Meanwhile, sophomore Holly Batey tied for 45th by shooting a three-round 252 (85-83-84).

“It was a good first tournament for us,” Robson said. “It really gave us a good feel of where we are right now and what we need to work on.”
