APSU Women’s Soccer

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University women’s soccer team host Valparaiso at 1:00pm, Sunday, in the second game of its current four-game home stand. Following the game, the Lady Govs will host a free youth clinic for all kids, eighth grade and under.

Sunday’s match is the final non-conference tilt for the Lady Govs before opening Ohio Valley Conference play next weekend against Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri. Austin Peay is looking to close out what has been the program’s finest non-conference season in history.

The Lady Govs are coming off a 5-0 win against Alabama A&M, Tuesday night, which was refreshing after a 2-1 loss against Southeastern Louisiana only two days prior. Head coach Kelley Guth’s team has been an offensive juggernaut throughout the season’s first half, leading OVC members in shots (190), goals (24), assists (19) and points (67).

Freshman Tatiana Ariza was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal and having three assists against Southern, last Friday. She leads Austin Peay with 14 points (5 g, 4a), while sophomore Jocelyn Murdoch also has five goals. Freshman Emily Kink has four goals and freshman Andy Quiceno has added two goals to go along with a team-best six assists.

Defensively, the Lady Govs have shown consistency with senior Hannah Jones and freshman Corey Osborn anchoring the back line. Senior keeper Carley Newman has made 18 saves, while allowing only four goals, for a 0.62 goals against average.

Valparaiso, meanwhile, is coming off a 2-0 loss at Vanderbilt, Friday. Austin Peay is the third OVC opponent for the Crusaders, who claimed a 1-0 win against Eastern Illinois and played to a scoreless tie against Eastern Kentucky.

Valpo is an offensive-minded club, much like the Lady Govs, averaging 12.2 shots per game.

Luisa Desario leads the Crusaders with three goals and two assists – both team highs. Desario also leads the team with 31 shots.

Catherine Tyrell and Janine Lytle each have two goals.

Austin Peay soccer is free and open to the public. Live stats for all home games are available at www.LetsGoPeay.com.
