Three former baseball Govs appears in same contest

Los Angeles – Three former Governors…one important baseball game.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsOn a night Colorado crept to 1.5 games from the Western Division lead, three former baseball Governors appeared in the same contest, Friday night, as the Rockies held off the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-5.

It was a game that saw former Govs’ catcher A.J. Ellis, in his second major league season, enjoy his short career’s best game as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.

His single in the second tied the game at 2-2 and his double in the fourth off Cy Young Award candidate Ubaldo Jimenez cut the Dodgers’ deficit to 5-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, former Governor lefthander George Sherrill was called out of the bullpen to help the Dodgers out of further trouble. In the one batter he faced, Sherrill retired pinch hitter Jay Payton for the inning’s final out after the Rockies had scored two runs.

Meanwhile, in the bottom of that same inning it wasn’t that type success for another former Governors lefthander hurler, Matt Reynolds. Since arriving from the minors in mid-August, the rookie has been crucial to the Rockies bullpen and their late-season run up the Western standings. But Friday night, in replacing Jimenez with one out in the seventh, he was unable to record an out in the three batters he faced. However, the Rockies got out of the inning unscathed with the Rockies maintaining their 7-4 lead. As a result, his impressive 2.19 ERA remained intact.

The two teams will play twice more over the next two days to complete the three-game series. Earlier Friday, Joe Torre, the manager of Ellis and Sherrill, announced he was resigning at season’s end from his post.
