Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Senior Luke Sherrod shot a final-round 70, but the Austin Peay State University men’s golf team finished 13th at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, Tuesday.

The 18-hole final round was not kind to the Govs, as Sherrod’s round was the only under-par in the four counting scores which totaled to 297. A three-round 888 placed the Govs 26 strokes ahead of Ohio Valley Conference member Morehead State (16th/ 914), but four shots behind Eastern Kentucky (11th/884) and 12 behind Murray State (9th/876). Miami (Ohio) won the event with a seven-under par 857, overtaking second-round leader Marshall, who finished third at two-under par 862.

“I’m happy with Luke’s play,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “There was a good wind today and a 70 is a good score. We’re going to have leave the pins alone when they’re tucked in certain positions. There are go-for-it pins and there are pins you have to leave alone. Sometimes you have to hit to the middle of the green, two-putt, take your par and move on. That’s one of the things we made mistakes on this week.”

In fact, Sherrod’s final round was the Govs only under-par round in the tournament. It was backed, Tuesday, by freshman Marco Iten and senior Brian Balthrop’s pair of 75s, Freshman Anthony Bradley was the fourth counter with a final-round 77.

Sherrod led the Govs with a 15th-place finish, while Iten finished 32nd and Bradley 61st. Junior Logan Loftus shot a 228 for 65th and Balthrop was one shot back in 69th.

“We didn’t get it done this week,” Kayden said. “We couldn’t make enough birdies. We had some guys in trouble in the hazards and we had a lot of three putts. We have to work on our short games. We’ve got to be better than this. We have too much talent to play like this.”
