Fatal Crash Occurs After 16 Year Old Falls Asleep at the Wheel

Clarksville Police DepartmentClarksville, TN – October 2nd, 2010, around 6:39am, a 54 year old man died in a motor vehicle crash on Fort Campbell Blvd after a 16 year old male dozed off at the wheel and crashed into his vehicle.

Charles Russell Jr, 54, of Clarksville was driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor, traveling in the left Southbound Lane of Fort Campbell Blvd. The 16 year old male was driving a 2007 Chevy Silverado traveling in the right Northbound Lane of Fort Campbell Blvd.

The 16 year dozed off at the wheel, crossed from the northbound to southbound lanes of Fort Campbell Blvd, and crashed into Russell’s vehicle in the center lane of the southbound side of Fort Campbell Blvd; Russell attempted to brake and moved from the left to center lane before the crash occurred. The Silverado crossed five lanes of highway (including the center turn lane) before the crashed occurred in the 2400 Block of Fort Campbell Blvd.

Charles Russell was extricated from his vehicle. Lifeflight landed on Fort Campbell Blvd and then transported him to Vanderbilt. He died from his injuries at Vanderbilt. Russell was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of crash.

The 16 year old was transported by ambulance to Gateway with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The 16 year old was wearing a seatbelt.

It does not appear as though alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Fort Campbell Blvd was closed for about 45 minutes.

Charge(s) are pending. The investigation is ongoing and the lead investigator is Officer Michael Caver, 931-648-0656, 7060.
