October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

Are You Aware?

Morale, Welfare and RecreationFort Campbell, KY – Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault,  and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another. It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background.

It often is accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior, and thus is part of a systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence results in physical injury, psychological trauma, and sometimes death. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime.

Make the right choice, become aware, and act to prevent domestic abuse. Domestic abuse may start with ignoring small warning signs, progress to relationship distress and escalate to severe violence. However, everyone in the community can make a difference and every positive action helps to change the climate.

Let’s utilize those Army Values and exemplify L-D-R-S-H-I-P! Loyalty to commit to the safety of the community and recognize those warning signs; Duty to reduce violence and report acts of abuse; Respect and value that everyone has the right to feel safe; Selfless Service to sustain personal and relationship preparedness with a never quit attitude; Honor the sense of purpose that is shared as we watch out for one another and intervene; Integrity to lead from the front, make the right choice, and do the right thing; and Personal Courage to be a sign of strength to seek help and refer others, sooner rather than later.

If you or someone you know is the victim of domestic abuse, or for more information regarding domestic abuse, please call Army Community Service (ACS) Family Advocacy Program at 270-798-7338 or 270-412-5500. You are not alone, there is help.
