Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team is set to host the 12th Annual F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, played at the Clarksville Country Club, Monday and Tuesday. The 36-hole tournament consists of 18 holes, Monday, with the final round being played Tuesday on the par-72, 5,960-yard layout.

“The key to Clarksville Country Club is putting well,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “The team who wins this event will be the team who hits the most fairways and is successful on the greens.  The course is in good shape, the rough is thick and the greens are quick, making hitting fairways very important.”

Joining host Austin Peay in the 12-team tournament field are Ohio Valley Conference members Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Murray State and Tennessee Tech along with future OVC member SIU Edwardsville. Also playing in this competitive event are Belmont, Houston Baptist, Lipscomb and two Sun Belt members, Troy and Western Kentucky.

Jacksonville State comes to Clarksville having won both tournaments it has played in 2010 while Murray State is the defending OVC tourney champ. In fact, 8 of the 12 teams entered have winning records so far this season.

Chelsea HarrisAustin Peay’s most recent team championship came in 2002, with the only other one occurring in 2000. The tourney will represent the final home event for five Lady Gov senior golfers: Chelsea Harris, Ashley Wathen, Catie Tucker and Beth Ann Burns. Harris, Burns and Tucker will represent the Lady Govs’ team along with junior Ashley Averitt and freshman Rachel Deaton.

Wathen, who is still seeking the consistency she displayed all last spring, will compete as an individual along with sophomores Tabitha Beard and Holly Batey and freshman Tala Mumford.

APSU has claimed just one medalist honor in the previous 12 years, Staci Lynch, in 2006. Harris, who is the defending OVC tournament champion, claimed medalist honors, September 27th-28th, at the SIU Edwardsville Intercollegiate presented by DoubleTree tournament. However, JSU’s Lucia Fernandez comes in as the tourney’s top-rated golfer, 147th, by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ranking through October 10th.

“After two weeks off we are anxious to get back to competing,” Robson said. “We have some great teams coming this week, including several OVC schools, and are excited to host at the Country Club.

“Chelsea is continuing to play well and we are looking forward to having a successful home event. We have four seniors that will be competing in their last home event and they want to play like they are capable of playing and have an exciting tournament.”

Play is set to begin Monday with an 8:00am, fixed tee start. Tuesday play is scheduled for an 8:30am shotgun start.

Breast Cancer RibbonOn Sunday, as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Lady Govs will wear pink during the practice round and have invited the other participating teams to do likewise.

“We’re happy to support this cause,” Robson said. “We hope by raising awareness, we will help generate support for the fight against breast cancer.”
